Slave Pens is the first wing of the Coilfang Reservoir in Zangarmarsh. More difficult than Hellfire Ramparts and the Blood Furnace, Slave Pens contains mostly Naga along with some draenei, some Bogstroks, and a few beasts. As the majority of enemies here are humanoid, any type of crowd control that can handle them is useful. Mennu the Betrayer, Rokmar the Crackler, and Quagmirran are the three boss encounters in Slave Pens. Defeating enemies in Slave Pens gives Cenarion Expedition reputation, and heroic mode requires the Reservoir Key, purchasable in Cenarion Refuge.

Abilities

Strategy

A relatively simple fight, assign someone to kill the totems immediately. If a fire totem is dropped, do not destroy it but instead get out of range of it. Grounding Totem can absorb his lightning bolts.

Heroic

Same strategy, the fire totem can kill low health characters, so make sure to be out of range of it if your health is low.

Rokmar the Crackler

Abilities

  • Grievous Wound - This bleed causes 750 physical damage every 2 seconds until the player has been healed to full health
    • Heroic Mode - about 1200 physical damage every 2 seconds.
  • Water Spit - AoE, deals 1600-1800 frost damage to nearby targets. 40 yard range.
  • Ensnaring Moss - Decreases attack speed and casting time by 50%. 30 yard range.
  • Enrage (Heroic Mode only) - At 20% health he enrages increasing his physical damage done and attack speed.

Strategy

Grievous Wound combined with Water Spit can tax your healer quite a bit. If Ensnaring Moss lands on the healer, it will only make things even more difficult. It can be very useful for an off healer to be ready to help the main healer to make sure everybody stays up during the entire fight. Once Rokmar is defeated, be sure to top off the tank so he doesn’t die, since the bleed might still be on him.

Heroic

On heroic, the strategy will remain the same, though many times healers will have an easier time with more abilities at their disposal for group healing. The last 20% is important to get through since Rokmar’s damage output will increase significantly.

Quagmirran

Abilities

  • Acid Geyser - Quagmirran selects one random party member and casts a channeled cone nature attack in the direction of that player.
  • Poison Bolt Volley - AoE poison bolt volley with a poison DoT.

Strategy

If possible, get Naturalist Bite’s Boon to help immensely with this fight. The fight is a relatively simple tank and spank. Face him away from the party, taunting whenever he casts the Acid Geyser. Any nature resistance is helpful, such as hunters’ Aspect of the Wild or Shaman’s Nature Resistance Totem. Poison Cleansing Totem is also very useful for dispelling all of the poisons that are inflicted after a volley.

Heroic

No real changes from normal mode, though all damage is increased significantly.

MAPS

 

Map 1

Entering Slave Pens, you will come across a fast moving pat. These Bogstroks are humanoids, so remember this when considering your crowd control. You’ll also encounter slavemasters who will bring slaves with them. Once you kill the slavemaster, the slaves will be freed and run away. Champions and rays fear and soothsayers mind control, so be mindful when engaging them. Once you enter the large center room, kill the pat in the middle and the slavemaster on the left, then, following the path on the map, hug the left of the middle pathway, cutting across to the right, watching for and avoiding the pat. Stay along the wall and then move towards the ramp that goes into the water. Now, pull the two defenders, which hit hard and are immune to CC on heroic mode. Stuns are effective, though. One more trashpull, then pull the first boss down while he is on the upward ramp to avoid the big pulls at the bottom.
 

Map 2

After killing Mennu the Betrayer, move underneath the ramp then around to the other side and jump onto the ramp to again avoid the large pulls. Head up the ramp and deal with some more naga pulls, watching pats. At the peak of the ramp, there is a pat of two more defenders. Drop into the water at the end of the broken ramp, and head to the left on the wall. Weeder Greenthumb (diamond) is at the top of the ramp after dropping into the water, if anyone is on that quest. On heroic mode, Skar’this the Heretic (circle) is found on the left side of this room before the tunnel and starts the SSC attunement, which is currently not necessary to enter SSC. Follow the map through familiar enemies to boss number two.
 

Map 3

Once Rokmar the Crackler is down, head away from his cave and move left. Make sure to kill the pat of two defenders before the group of five in the middle of the area. These five can also be avoided by hugging the left wall, if desired. Kill the group at the bottom of the ramp and again avoid a group of five by hugging the left side of the ramp. Make sure you have enough room to stay away from that group, but be aware that there is a pat inside of the cave. Kill the pat and then the bogstroks in the next room. Kill the naga, then when you free Naturalist Bite (triangle), more naga will come from the hallway you came in through. You can distract them before they are engaged, and if you save Bite, he will give you a buff when you talk to him again. Now you can pull Quagmirran.

LORE

Slave Pens is the first instance in the Coilfang Reservoir in Zangarmarsh and is inhabited by the Naga, led by Lady Vashj. The Naga have been pumping water out of Zangarmarsh for unknown reasons, which is evident from the surface of the many lakes in Zangarmarsh. This has been causing quite a disturbance in the delicate ecology of Zangarmarsh, corrupting and destroying life native to the area. There is a much larger force of Naga in the underground caverns of the Coilfang Reservoir, where nefarious deeds seem to be taking place. This needs to be looked into and dealt with in order to restore the Zangarmarsh. Some explorers from the Cenarion Expedition have disappeared into Slave Pens, which also needs to be investigated.

SECRET TACTICS

Shortcut to Rokmar the Crackler

At the peak of the series of ramps after Mennu the Betrayer, wait for the pat of two defenders to move away and run towards the slight cutout on either side of the bridge, jumping down to a lower level bridge below. Turn around and go to the right edge of the bridge, outside of the railing, and stay on the small ledge. At the last crack in the texture of the ground, turn at a 45 degree angle and run straight off. If done correctly, you will land on another small ledge over the water. Turn around the corner and jump onto the area to the side of Rokmar’s cave. When he pats out, run in to the back wall of his cave.
