Hellfire Ramparts is the first part of Hellfire Citadel, and is the first instance encountered by players entering the Outlands. The main type of enemy found in Ramparts is the Fel Orc (humanoid), sometimes accompanied by wolves (beasts). There are three boss encounters in the instance. First is Watchkeeper Gargolmar, next is Omor the Unscarred, followed by Vazruden and his mount Nazan. Enemies in Ramparts will earn you Honor Hold or Thrallmar reputation depending on your faction. Heroic Mode requires Honored reputation or above along with the [Flamewrought Key] which can be purchased from the appropriate Quartermaster.
BOSS LIST
Watchkeeper Gargolmar
Abilities
- Mortal Wound - Reduces healing on the target by 5% stacking up to ten times. Not dispellable.
- Heroic Mode - Reduces healing on the target by 10% instead of 5%
- Surge - Charges and knocks back the furthest enemy.
- Retaliation - Counterattacks any melee attacks from the front.
Strategy
The main strategy on this boss is to take out the two healers that he has with him. Either kill them or CC them before killing the boss. None of his abilities should be problematic at all. Melee DPS should make sure to attack the boss from behind in order to avoid his Retaliation.Heroic
The strategy remains the same on heroic mode. If possible, CC the healers rather than killing them to prevent the Mortal Wound debuff from stacking too high on the tank.Omor the Unscarred
Abilities
- Treacherous Aura - Debuffs a party member causing damage to all players near him over 15 seconds. Dispellable.
- Heroic Mode - replaced with Bane of Treachery, which causes much more damage and is not dispellable
- Felhounds - Summons two Felhounds that can Drain Life, healing Omor. Vulnerable to CC including enslave and banish.
- Heroic Mode - Stronger Felhounds summoned, they can also Drain Mana of nearby enemies.
- Shadow Whip - Short range attack launches a player high into the air, causing fall damage. This is randomly targeted.
- Shadowbolt - Standard shadow damage spell cast on target outside of melee range.
- Spell Reflect - Periodically cast when below 20% health.
Strategy
Most of the damage during this fight will be shadow based, so having some sort of resistance to it will be an immense help. On normal, the main priority is taking care of the Felhounds. With a warlock, one can be enslaved and once can be banished or feared. If not, they are easy to kill. Whoever gets the aura should stay away from others, if the tank gets it, the melee should run out. Ranged should spread out in order to minimize the damage. It is a curse and can be removed as such. None of the other abilities should be a problem.Heroic
On heroic, the Bane of Treachery is a much bigger concern. Whoever receives the aura should get away from all other players, and everyone should be ready to use a potion or healthstone if needed. Melee heavy groups will likely have some trouble with this fight because of the high damage done by the aura. It is possible to range tank Omor to make the aura easier to manage, as he will stay in his starting position during the entire fight while casting shadowbolts. Still, the felhounds need to be taken care of as quickly as possible to keep them from draining the mana of your healer. They are still susceptible to crowd control, so having a warlock can help out immensely. Hunter traps are also effective, as are fears.Vazruden and Nazan
Abilities
- Fireball - Nazan will shoot fireballs at a random target while he is flying. Wherever it hits will burn for a few seconds, causing lots of fire damage to anyone standing in the flame.
- Cone of Fire - While on the ground, he will shoot a cone of fire at the target with the highest threat.
- Area of Effect Fear (Heroic only) - This will fear anyone within range for a few seconds.
Strategy
This encounter begins with what looks like the last trash pull before the boss' platform. Once you kill both orcs, Vazruden will land on the platform and attack you while Nazan shoots his fireballs at the party. Keep some sort of fire resistance on the party if possible, and move out of the fires as soon as they land. Some groups will continuously move Vazruden around the outside of his platform in order to make sure nobody gets caught in the fire. Once Nazan lands, make sure the tank picks it up, as it will likely attack the healer first. At this point, Vazruden should be killed fast. The tank needs to make sure to face Nazan away from the group while melee DPS stays behind Nazan in order to avoid the Cone of Fire that he shoots.Heroic
All of the damage is increased significantly, so group coordination to avoid all unnecessary damage is vital. Fire resistance will be very useful in this fight. In the first phase, while fighting Vazruden, make sure the tank does not stay feared for too long. Use Fear Ward, Tremor Totem, a PvP trinket, Berserker Rage, Divine Shield, or similar to make sure he can keep aggro. Picking up the dragon when he lands is also very important, as he can quickly kill any low armor class.MAPS

Hellfire Ramparts is a pretty straight forward instance. Entering Ramparts, there are a few basic pulls. The Warhounds see through stealth, so don't expect to sap anything near wolves. The most important thing to keep in mind for this section is that the Beastmaster will call for help after a short time, which will summon additional wolves, so kill it quickly. |
|
After killing Watchkeeper Gargolmar, a few pulls can be avoided by hugging the left side of the curved hallway. Move up the spiraling ramp, at the top of which you will find a difficult pull with a group of casters and one melee. Line of Sight the casters to the ramp where you can tank them. After that, you will move out onto the top of the wall with a few groups along with pats. Carefully pull the groups back a ways to be safe. Once the way is clear, move across the bridge on the right side. |
|
Once you have defeated Omor the Unscarred, move back to the terrace and finish clearing it off. Move down the bridge towards the final boss encounter, where there are a pair of orcs. Once you kill the last pair of orcs, the boss encounter begins, so make sure your group is ready before pulling them. |
LORE
Hellfire Ramparts is the first wing of the Hellfire Citadel, which stands in the middle of Hellfire Peninsula. The instance takes place on top of the defensive walls of the citadel. Fel Orcs are coming out of the Hellfire Citadel, and the purpose is to take out any opposition found there in order to weaken the defenses and enable further exploration into the Citadel.
Once the defenses on the ramparts have been destroyed, an investigation will be made into the second wing of the Hellfire Citadel, the Blood Furnace, to find out what type of deeds are going on inside. There, it becomes apparent that the blood of the pit lord Magtheridon is being used to create the fel orcs.
