LEVELING
1-10 | 11-20 | 21-40 | 41-59 | 60 | 61-70
1-10
Level 1
When you first roll your paladin you will start with your first seal, Seal of Righteousness, and your first healing spell holy light. Both of these spells are central to the Paladin class and you will use them clear until the end game. You also start with an aura to increase your armor, devotion aura.
Level 4
You receive a couple more key abilities, most notable is your Judgment ability which lets you unleash your seals power on your target. This will give you the opportunity to practice the seal/judge/reseal mechanic that will be central to your career as a paladin. You also receive your first blessing, blessing of might. Keep this on yourself at all times, and share it with everyone you meet!
Level 6
Here you get your first bubble, although it will be a few levels before you can execute the infamous bubble/hearth! You also receive the seal of the crusader. With this you will change your combat order to Seal of the Crusader / Judge Crusader / Seal of Righteousness
Level 8
You get the cleanse ability and Hammer of Justice to stun your enemies. While not the most exciting levels for a Paladin, you should now have a basic grasp on the mechanics.
Level 10
Now that you have your first talent point it is a good time to say it is highly recommended that you level as retribution. It will make things go much faster. You will want to stay retribution at least until 40 but many recommend riding it all the way to 70. I suggest somewhere in between. Once you get into your 50-60s you will definitely want to be collecting gear for your end-game spec, and you should be running enough instances to have the grouping experience you will need.
At level 10, you get two great "get out of jail free" spells in Lay on Hands which will bring your (or an allies) health up to full (and take all your mana) and blessing of protection for a bubbling your friends. You will also likely be moving to the next area with lots of new quests to work on!
11-20
Level 12
You'll get your first class quest to learn the spell "Redemption" which will allow you to resurrect your enemies, Each race has a different quest, but they are all fairly straight forward, and should not present any difficulty.
Level 14
This one gives you the Paladin taunt "Righteous defense" which is very useful for tanking. Also, you get blessing if Wisdom to increase your mana regeneration. Keep in mind you can only have one blessing up at a time, so choose which is better for you Might or Wisdom. You can swap them out depending on the situation.
Level 16
Here you will get retribution aura which is very useful in most situations, and essential if you are a tank. You also get righteous fury which is more or less the "tank button" for paladins if you are in a group and not tanking, do not have it up. If you are a tank, make sure it NEVER fades (refresh every 30 min).
Level 18
You get a passive ability "Spiritual Attunement" which gives you mana every time you are healed, and essentially makes Paladin tanking viable. You also get blessing of freedom which is very useful in PVP to remove snares and roots.
Level 20
20 is a major level for a Paladin. You get a major tanking/DPS ability called consecration which is an AOE damage effect around the Paladin, and you get Flash of Light which is the most mana efficient heal spell for a Paladin. You also get exorcism which does some extra damage against undead.
You also get a class quest to get a new weapon. I know you are probably looking for a nice guide here, but I'm just going to say "Don't Bother!" It's a nice weapon, but definitely not worth the time. You are also headed out into a new area, and are free to go to a number of new places.
21-40
Level 22
This one brings a new aura, concentration aura which you shouldn't leave up all the time, but it is great to switch to when you need to heal and are being attacked. Also you receive Seal of Justice. This is not the most useful in the end game but when you are leveling you can judge it to stop a mob from running away. This is quite nice since you are melee and it's a pain to chase them down and worry about agroing more mobs.
Level 24
Turn Evil, a fear that only works on undead and demons.
Level 26
Blessing of Salvation. Your DPS will love you for this seal as it reduces threat by 30%. It is also good to slap on that warlock that is always pulling off of the tank.
Level 28
Shadow Resist Aura, which increases your... resist...against shadow.
Level 30
Another big one. With the new patch you will be able to train "Summon Warhorse" which translates to a free mount! This will save you some gold, but don't get too excited, you will have to work for the next one!
Other new abilities include Divine Intervention which is used for wipe recovery in instances (you die in order to save someone else that can res the group, seems sort of noble, huh?). You also get seal of light which will return health to you. Finally if you are leveling retribution, which you should be, you get sanctity aura to help amplify your holy damage. You should switch to this as your main aura.
Level 32
Frost resistance aura... moving on.
Level 34
You get your new and improved bubble. Divine Protection, you aren't quite able to bubble hearth ye t (it doesn't last long enough) but you can attack while you are bubbled, just much slower than normal.
Level 36
Fire Resistance Aura... you get the picture by now.
Level 38
Seal of wisdom. This can be very useful in long mana intensive fights as it returns mana to you as you attack. It remains useful into the end game, and is great if you are grouping with multiple Paladins so you can have crusader and wisdom judged at all times. Your casters will love you for this as well!
Level 40
This isn't nearly as exciting as it used to be, you've been riding around on your warhorse for 10 levels now, but there is another big reason to be excited for this ding. Plate Armor! That's right time to retire all that soft mail you've been carrying around and get some real armor! Of course it might take you a few levels to find suitable upgrades...
41-59
Level 42
Cleanse, which means you can retire purify forever. There is no disadvantage to using it over purify. This will remove all the effects purify does plus magical effects.
Level 44
Here you get Hammer of Wrath. This does lots of damage, but can only be used on mobs that are under 20% health. The plus side is it is one of your only ranged attacks so it is great for smacking a mob that is on the run.
Level 46
Blessing of Sacrifice, an interesting spell that allows you to take damage from the person you cast it on. It can be useful in PVP to prevent being crowd controlled (damage breaks most forms of CC) or in specific applications in various PVE encounters. Preventing repentance in the Maiden fight in Karazhan comes to mind.
Level 50
You get Holy Wrath which is a powerful AOE attack, but only effects undead and demons. If you are in the right situation this spell is amazing, but most of the time it sits because of a lack of AOE undead pulls (Karazhan and the Plaguelands being the big exceptions).
At 50 you can also get the top talent in whatever spec you have chosen. It is around this time (if you haven't already) you really should decide how you want to level your Pally. Do you like tanking, healing, or DPSing?
While quests are quite fun up until 60 (the Plaguelands were designed for Paladins!) the train of new abilities comes to a halt for a bit here. You get Greater Blessing in this time which last longer and affect all group members of the same class (they require reagents as well), but other than that nothing that will change your play style much. Just enjoy the bounty of undead and one of the most interesting places for paladins lore-wise and gameplay-wise.
Level 58
Head out to the Outlands for some fun quests, many of which involve demons that you should be able to handle very easily
60
Level 60
There is one important thing left for you back in the old world.
Epic Mount Quest
You are now able to pick up your quest for your epic land mount. On the surface this may seem like another free mount, but trust me, it is not!
As you approach level 60, its not a bad idea to start gathering the materials you need to complete this quest
Alliance
Alliance paladins need the following:
- 350 gold
- 6 Arcanite Bars
- 5 Stratholm Holy Water
- 40 Runecloth
- 10 Arthas' Tear
- 1 Azerothian Diamond
- 1 Pristine Diamond
- 20 Enriched Manna Biscuits
You don't need all of these materials, but it is a good idea to get a head start! Once you ding 60, talk to your trainer who will send you to the Stormwind Catherdral to talk to Lord Grayson Shadowbreaker. He will give you two quests: Emphasis on Sacrifice and The Work of Grimand Elmore. You must then bring 150g to High Priest Rohan in Ironforge. He will give you the quest item The Exorcism Censor. Take it to Terrordale in the Eastern Plaguelands at use it on the green circles to summon spirits you must kill. After 25 of them are dead you can return to Stormwind and talk to Grimand Elmore. Make sure you buy some manna biscuits from the Argent Dawn while you are in the area, you will need them later!
You need to give Elmore another 150g plus 6 arcanite bars, 40 runecloth, 10 Arthas's Tears, and 5 Stratholme Holy Water. The toughest mats to get is the holy water, you will need a 5 man group (maybe less if you know a few 70s) to get into Stratholme. You will find the holy water in crates around the instance, you shouldn't need to down any bosses but you will probably need the group to handle the trash. The Arcanite can be made by an alchemist friend or purchased from the AH, you will need thorium bars and arcane crystals to have a friend make them (easy to come by if you area a miner). The Arthas's Tears should be cheap on the AH, and you know where to farm runecloth by now.
Once you do that you need to go to Southshore and talk to Merideth Carlson. Give her the manna biscuits and 50 more gold. Next you need to head into Dire Maul West. Again you will need a group to down the first boss Tendris Warpwood. Make sure you kill all his protectors when you pull him or you will have a hand full during the boss fight (read: wipe)! When you down the boss the Ancient Equine Spirit will appear, give him the manna biscuits and he will bless the barding.
Head back to Stormwind and give Shadowbreaker a Pristine Black Diamond and a Azerothian Diamond, its probably simplest to just get these from the AH. He will give you the Divination Scryer and the final part of this quest. You will need to go to Scholomance and summon a special boss, a Death Knight. You will probably need 5 people to do this, and it is helpful if you have more than one Paladin, they are amazing in this fight! Head over to Rattlegore and kill him and clear the room. Head down to the basement and use the Scryer to summon the death knight. Place the scryer on the floor in the opposite corner from your group and get ready for some waves of undead. Each wave is vulnerable to a certain judgment, and the judgments will be buffed to do lots of fun AOE stuff. This is the only fight this will ever happed so enjoy! Handle the waves as follows:
Banal Spirits: Judge Wisdom
Malicious Spirits: Judge Justice
Corrupted Spirits: Judge Righteousness
Shadowy Spirits: Judge Light
After 8 waves you get the Death Knight. After you down him (nothing too tricky in that fight) you will get the Lost Soul. Right Click it to cleanse it and get the redeemed soul. Grats! You have your epic mount. It may be a lot more work that just buying a faction mount, but I found it much more fun! The quest line is well done and seems to fit very well with the Paladin lore.
Horde
Horde paladins need the folowing:
- 350g
- 6 Arcanite Bars
- 5 Dark Runes
- 40 Runecloth
- 10 Sungrass
- 1 Azerothian Diamond
- 1 Pristine Diamond
Once you ding 60, talk to Knight-Lord Bloodvalor in Silvernoon City to get the quest. Then head over to Lady Liadrin to get a series of tasks you need to complete.
For the first give her 150g, 40 runecloth, 10 sungrass, 5 dark runes, and 6 arcanite bars. The sungrass is cheap on the AH. To get the dark runes you will need to get a group together and farm Scholomance. It is possible to get these on the AH as well, but they are not cheap usually so you might be better off heading to Scholo.
Next, just like the alliance, you are off to the plaguelands! You need to go to the Eastern Plaguelands and kill 15 Scourge Siege Engineers and destroy 3 meat wagons. You can find them southeast of the entrance to the Ghostlands. Go back to Silvermoon to turn it in and get the next part of the quest.
Go back to the EPL and steal a vial of holy water from Tyr’s Hand. These guys are elite mobs, so you might want to find some friends. It is in the southeast corner of the EPL, Go in to the building on the left and turn to the right as you head in. After killing a few mobs you will find the holy water on a plate on the desk. This is not easy to solo, so have a group.
Go back to Silvermoon (again) and give 50g to Zalle’s Reagents in the Western Bazaar to get the Arcane Catalyst. Then go to Dalria’s Poisons in Murder Row to get the Crepuscular Powder for 150g. Bring Liadrin the reagents along with the two diamonds you gathered earlier (or off to the AH if you didn’t).
The last step is to go to the Alonsus Chapel and douse the eternal flame with the tainted holy water. Take a group into Stratheholm, if you have the key to the city or an engineer/rogue you will only have one pull and will likely only need 3-4 people. If you don’t, you will probably need a full group. Go into the Chapel and douse the flame. Aurius will appear and you have to kill him, once he is down there are 5 more ghosts you have to kill. Take out Hieronymus out first then go for the others. When the all die the chapel ignites and you just need to go back to Liadrin and get your mount! Enjoy the new mount, and also enjoy the fact that the alliance have to work much harder to get theirs!
61-70
Level 62
Now you can really super-charge your new mount with Crusader Aura. This aura increases the mounted speed of you and your entire party by 20%. It is the best speed buff in the game, and it doesn't stack with anything else (so don't worry about holding on to riding crops and carrots). This aura is great fun; just make sure you switch out of it when it is time to get off your mount.
Level 64
You get either Seal of Vengeance if you are alliance or Seal of Blood if you are Horde. These spells are the only difference between horde and alliance paladins. Seal of Vengeance is the Paladins only damage over time spell, and can be judged for some major damage. The Seal of Blood will up your DPS, but at the cost of your health. This is not always a bad thing, as heals are great for gaining mana.
Not much except rank-ups until level 70
Level 70
You finally get your wings! You gain the avenging wrath ability which kicks up your DPS a notch for 15 seconds. It also gives you forbearance, so don't expect to bubble after using it. This ability is great for Ret Pallys looking for a little boost, and can give Prot Pallys a nice jump in their threat generation.
PROFESSIONS
Herbalism, Leatherworking, Mining
It is always good to take a gathering profession to help with cash flow, but none of these offer any specific advantage for the paladin.
This is a useful all around profession, but again nothing that a Paladin can benefit from more than any other class.
There are several unique pieces of armor that make picking this up worthwhile. Lots of both healing and tanking recipes that should last you clear into the end game. Many of them are BOE which means you could always buy them, but there are a few that are not and they make leveling this worth your time. Not a bad choice for a Paladin.
There is one reason to pick this up, and it's a big one. The goggles! With Primal Nethers no longer being soulbound you can make a helm that is better than Tier 5 for all 3 specs before you even ding 70. This may seem like a lot for one item, but it's worth it. There are also a few other nice trinkets and whatnot, but get this for the goggles. Also it's just a fun profession all around.
Unless your raiding guild needs you to make War Drums, skip this, nothing for the Paladin here.
No advantage here, don't pick this one up either.
Again a good all around profession, and not a bad way to make money, but there is little reason to choose this for a Paladin.
The ring enchants are nice, that extra spell damage or healing can come in handy, but over all this is not worth the price of leveling this profession.
SPECS
Holy
Holy is the Paladins healing spec. Holy Paladins are very desirable healers in the end game, being able to do extraordinary single target healing, and also being able to wear Plate, making them far less "squishy" than other healing classes. The have are very mana efficient and have large mana pools. They can also do extra damage with abilities like holy shock. Many Paladins spec to maximize this with the popular "shockodin" build.
Pros
- High Mana/Mana Regen
- Great Single Target Healing
- Able to farm well with high spell damage
Cons
- Difficult to solo quests being a support build
- Less health than other builds
Protection
Protection in the paladin's tanking spec. They are able to take huge amounts of damage and are able to hold agro on several mobs at once. They are highly desirable for trash tanking in raids, but can make viable end-game tanks. They have huge health pools, but allow there mana pool and regen rate to suffer. With this spec you can survive about anything, although your ability to do damage will be severely limited. Any sort of typical farming is off the table, and it takes longer to level in this spec. Paladins have the amazing ability to "AOE Farm" but in general, you better have some friends to help with questing.
Pros
- High Health / Armor
- Great AOE Tanks
- Very High Survivability
- Ability to AOE farm weaker mobs
Cons
- Small mana pool, slow mana regen
- Almost impossible to solo quest and farm
- Very low damage output.
- Difficult to PVP
Retribution
Retribution is the Paladin's DPS spec. They use two handed weapons and do high melee and spell damage. They may not do the highest DPS of all the pure DPS classes, but they are desirable in raids due to there ability to refresh judgments, perform buffs, cleanse, etc. They also are able to very well in PVP. This is the spec you should use to level, as it provides the fastest way to complete quests and farm. Unfortunately, because lower level Paladins level in this spec there has been a negative connotation associated with it. You may hear them referred to as "retnoobs." Despite this, retribution can be a very useful spec.
Pros
- High Damage
- Best Spec for leveling
- High level of raid utility
- Very good in PVP
Cons
- Negative stereotypes, difficulty getting into 5-mans
- Difficult to gear for
- Often out DPSed by other melee classes
