Should Of Learned It 400+ Days Ago...

Logic has done it to me again.  And by it, I mean making me look like a complete moron (I lack a brain).  During my last PTR run I learned something that I really should have known for over a year.  A simple, small detail pertaining to World of Warcraft’s itemization.  Hell, I’ve played along side it, seen it in action, even inspected those geniuses who figured it out, but the synapse never fired.  The light bulb never turned on.  I never knew that you can put any color gem in any color slot (meta and prismatic aren’t colors).

I was late to the last PTR run so I was rushing to get my gear all settled.  Due to time constraints, I asked another party member which gems I should create and was told to fill everything with haste and spell power.  “Wait, in all of the slots?” I asked.  I imagine he rolled his eyes and nodded his head as he nonchalantly said yes.  “You…you can do that?” I stammered, completely unaware that Blizzard allows you to break the color coding (how dare Blizzard!).

Seriously, how dare the designers allow such an atrocity.  That’s like letting a kindergartner hit the square block through the round hole.  It doesn’t work that way!  It’s blasphemy, sacrilege, desecration!  My world is shattered.  Up is now down, left is topwise and right is cornerwise.  Jon & Kate might as well be divorced.  I’m lost.  Dejected.  Stupefied at my oversight.

No wonder Rawr kept telling me to decorate Solidsamm with Delicate Cardinal Rubies.  I…just assumed it was wrong.  Pretty sure that assumption just made an ass of me.  Time to go poke my brain with a Q-Tip.

Needless to say, I dropped badges, honor and cold hard gold on regemming Solidsamm and Solidsagart to cover for my stupidity.  Hopefully my story allows for someone else to come to the realization that nothing in WoW has to be logical, before it bites them in the rump.

Note: You’ll negate any socketing bonus if you fill the slots with incorrect colors.

Guess who else was late to the I-can-put-red-gems-in-blue-sockets party?? Maybe it’s just the particular gear that I have, but I’ve found so far that the socket bonuses usually (but not always) outweigh the extra stats I could get with a different color gem. Sneaky Blizz!

By Alayea on Tuesday, November 24th, 2009 at 4:02 pm

I’ve always known that, but I’m very reluctant to “break” the colors. By that I mean that if a gem slot is blue, I’ll stick it with a green just so I get the bonus thing. I believe I only went against that once, and it was because the item was terrible but still better than what I was wearing at the time.

By tom on Tuesday, November 24th, 2009 at 4:16 pm

yea this has happened to me before i was not paying attention and i put a red gem in a yellow socket and a yellow in a red socket and i ended haveing to buy new gems to fix my mistake >.<

By Turd on Tuesday, November 24th, 2009 at 4:21 pm

Isn’t it logical? It sounds pretty logical to me…you can put any gem in any socket…but if the color matches, you get a nice bonus :D

I rather have my nice bonus.

By Gaudim on Tuesday, November 24th, 2009 at 4:28 pm

It should be noted that, very rarely, socketing for the bonus will make you better off. IE if the socket bonus is +10 agi and if you were to socket with the proper color (or hybrid) that +10 added to the gem would be greater than breaking the socket set.
Also, you need to be aware of meta gem requirements. If your meta gem requires specific colors (Relentless metas require one of each color) and you only socket red, you will not get your meta benefit.

By nick on Tuesday, November 24th, 2009 at 4:43 pm

    lmao..

Sometimes the power of two same color gems outweighs the benefits of the bonus plus an outcolor gem, for instance hunters, get a belt with a yellow socket, get +4 agi bonus for using it, most of the time just put a 20 agi gem there.

By nick on Tuesday, November 24th, 2009 at 4:43 pm

    oh, but as a rogue..

I’d gem for Attack Power if your going envenom.

By littleraven on Tuesday, November 24th, 2009 at 4:59 pm

yeah, im a JC and i didnt find that out until about the first few months of wrath…i felt like an idiot haha

    This story hurts my soul.

By Wittgenstein on Tuesday, November 24th, 2009 at 5:24 pm

Well…everybody has to “not know” something in this huge game, right? Like that first time you play, and try to find Mankrik’s Wife on your own, run down The Barrens just to die for a hyena…or getting upset because that cat’s eye emerald “is not in the place were QH says it is”…
    Shit happens UHhAUhsuAHSHUAS

wish I would have noted that on the forums for you. I have been stacking AGI for a while now. something I would like to mention that also might help the gemming and enchanting of gear. go to http://www.warcrafter.net it can bring up your character from the armory (resync once an hour) then you can go into there “sandbox” mode. It allows you to change the gems and enchants or the gear itself. http://www.wowhead.com I think does it as well, but warcrafter helps give a better representation of what the changes do to your dps for abilities. I am considering stacking haste as it shows a small dps increase, but am just fine with stacking AGI. I have seen others stack AP or ArmPen. AP is fine for straight damage increase (max damage goes up for sure), but if you have one of the ArmPen trinkets and stack it in gems you can come close or hit the cap of 1400 for that.

    welcome to powergaming!!

I knew this, but for some reason I still didn’t use that knowledge, taking pains to match gems regardless of the socket bonus.

By Wonocva on Tuesday, November 24th, 2009 at 11:58 pm

I’ve known this since…the first few weeks of wrath, but I hadn’t had a JC until then.

However, I hate disorganization in most forms. So I’m usually the guy who says “eff you” to the person telling me to gem all strength and ends up with a shit load of oranges and purples so I can get my bonus.

IT’S BECAUSE I’M COOL, YOU ALL KNOW IT!

By FozziE on Wednesday, November 25th, 2009 at 12:03 am

I’ve known this since… the first time i read about it on WoW’s homepage before burning Crusade came out…

Play with your socket bonuses as each class is different and sometimes the bonus is worth it. (rare). Pretty basic knowledge or so I thought =/

By dianode on Wednesday, November 25th, 2009 at 2:17 am

lol i never knew this either >.<

By mavman on Wednesday, November 25th, 2009 at 3:06 am

remember not to stack agility/strenght/whatever you thing is best for you blindly … if the socketbonus is 8 agility you might as well put 10 agility/10 crit in there to gain 18 agility and 10 crit which is surely cooler than just 20 agility …
(apply this example to your favourite stats)

By bobby2cents on Wednesday, November 25th, 2009 at 4:39 am

omg I seriously didn’t know about this ’til just now…and I have two level 80’s, one of which raided Naxx25 back in Jan/Feb…no one ever pointed out my gems…

I too had assumed you had to match the colours because they say “Matches a XX socket” and the like…

wow is all I can say….and O.o and a big thank-you to you iTZKooPA

By ViperhawkZ on Wednesday, November 25th, 2009 at 5:13 am

I knew you could do this, but I love socket bonuses… So my gems are Strength, Strength/Crit and Strength/Stamina instead of just Strength.

By Bruknar on Wednesday, November 25th, 2009 at 6:32 am

I know its advised to ignore socket bonus and just stack the one gem type e.g SP for dps casters. But I generally ignore that and match all the gems up, it looks tidy that way :)

By Treecko (Doomhammer EU) on Wednesday, November 25th, 2009 at 7:25 am

LOL, i found this out a couple of weeks ago aswell. When i was juggling with Stam gems to see what would give me the best HP pool.

And i saw someone with the craftabel 245itemlvl tank chest, with 3 jc stam gems in it. and i was wondering if it had 3 blue sockets. So i asked the guy. Imagine how i felt wen he told me how it was possible. DOH! :)

By cocopuff on Wednesday, November 25th, 2009 at 10:05 am

dont feel bad ZKooPA i only learned this soon after the WOTLK release

By Holy on Wednesday, November 25th, 2009 at 10:36 am

    ROFL.

You should have knew that. I even knew it, my brother knew it.

By Dan on Wednesday, November 25th, 2009 at 11:14 am

Stack agi on my hunter with the exception of 2 gems to cover my meta requirement. Don’t accidentally over gem and forget the meta like I did once after I docketed the gem wasting 20k honor

By Barishi on Wednesday, November 25th, 2009 at 12:22 pm

I figured this out a couple months ago too :P

By kerthmuthar on Wednesday, November 25th, 2009 at 1:23 pm

what a NEWB, NOOB depending on your taste of the term. I knew this my first day in oulands when i got my gemed chest from one of the quest in hellfire. I have only been playing for 2 years and bc was out for what 3 wow. but i am sure there are things i didnt know like you can convert more then one badge at a time. here i am a noob in dalaran trying to change 100 triumps to valor so i can get my alt the bracers. needless to say going down two badges one at a time wow. then talking with someone on vent there like hey you dump ass you can shift click on it and change more in at a time. or the time when i started wow i turned the annoying help thing when i first started cause everythime you did somethinjg this thing popped up and i turned it off and it was lvl say 40 before i realized i had talent oints wow huh things we over look that are right there biting us in the ass

By Paul on Wednesday, November 25th, 2009 at 1:24 pm

well i understanded that i could do that back in the begginning of bc, while i still played in some f**kin private servers :D

By Doug on Wednesday, November 25th, 2009 at 1:43 pm

Wow, thank you for making this article. Shandara’s spreadsheet was always telling me to regem. And I was like WTF! I CAN’T FIT RED GEMS IN A BLUE SLOT!, but now I know I can!!!

By Heartbourne on Wednesday, November 25th, 2009 at 4:49 pm

Next thing you know you’ll say you don’t know what tanking does

By Saeth on Thursday, November 26th, 2009 at 5:57 am

i did know about this socketing craziness but im not gonna laugh at anyone for not knowing about it.

when i was levelling up and i got my first peice of socketed gear (Ramps at lvl 60) i was a late-comer to the game so i just went to my mates “ok guys sockets and gems, explain” and they did, so i knew from the start… but only cos they did.

most people dont have stuff explained to them that way and just get laughed at and called a noob if the do ask or get something wrong, unfairly in my opinion.

PS thanks Kerth i was just going to change a load of Conquest to Valour emblems u saved me about 15 mins of clicking. seems like the title is appropriate after all :D

By khazzhar on Thursday, November 26th, 2009 at 8:52 am

About the time that Wrath came out, I learned this :). However, I still do gem for socket bonusses, because often those socket bonusses are = to about half of another gem. I see people who gem only for 1 thing (prot wars/pallies with ONLY stam gems, ret pallies with ONLY strength gems, holy pallies with ONLY intellect gems) and I think those people lack some stats. Sure if you stack enough of anything you become useful, but still I like to fill out my socket bonusses :).
