A series of trademark requests that Blizzard Entertainment recently filed may indicate the possible name and lore of the next World of Warcraft expansion. Wednesday, Tumblr blogger Supererogatory revealed that Blizzard is seeking trademarks that would include computer games, paper-based products and online games with the name “Cataclysm.”
For all we know, that could be the name of Blizzard’s super-secret project under development, a new MMO or something else completely unrelated to WoW. But given the name’s relationship to the Maelstrom, some people (including myself) speculate that this could be the name for the next WoW expansion.
There’s been a great deal of speculation for a long while now that the next expansion will relate to the swirling vortex of power that lies between Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms, the Maelstrom. To refresh your memory, the Maelstrom was created in a huge world event at the end of the War of the Ancients, thousands of years ago. Often referred to as the Cataclysm or the Great Sundering, it all started with the destruction of the Well of Eternity. The giant explosion that this caused ripped Azeroth asunder, destroying most of the land mass (previously there was one giant continent, Kalimdor) and reshaping what little remained. In place of the Well of Eternity now lies the Maelstrom, a constant, thunderous reminder of the peaceful times that now are lost to the world. It also is implied that the giant storm is slowly drawing in the surrounding land masses. It could even eventually swallow all that remains of Azeroth.
What more could you ask for in a conflict?
Another noteworthy, though perhaps coincidental factor: WoW.com pointed out that the WoWcataclysm domain expired on June 26, the same day that the trademark requests were filed. Interesting.
There also have been a lot of guesses that the next expansion could be related to the Emerald Dream, the realm of Dragon Aspect Ysera. That speculation was flamed by several blue posts that hinted at the area as a possibilty for future development, but I haven’t seen any new, official mentions of that for at least a couple of years.
Let’s see if we can glean a little bit more information for what the Trademark would encompass by reading the details of the applications, which were filed June 26. According to the documents posted on the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s website, the three requests are classified to cover:
- Computer game software and related instruction manuals and guides sold together as a unit; downloadable computer game software; interactive multimedia computer game program; mousepads
- Comic books, computer game strategy guides, trading cards, coloring books, adhesive stickers, rub-on transfers, notebooks, stationery-type portfolios, posters, greeting cards, calendars, instructional leaflets in the field of computer games, computer game instruction manuals, catalogs in the field of computer games, advertisement boards of paper or cardboard, photographs, art prints
- Entertainment services, namely, providing on-line computer games; providing computer games that may be accessed via a global computer network; and providing on-line information in the field of computer gaming entertainment
It certainly sounds like an MMO to me.
So what does everyone else think? Would you be all for some maelstrom-based content for the next expansion? Do you think that’s what all this information points to? What else do you think the trademarks could be for?

I highly doubt this has anything to do with the next expansion. I think it’s something to do with the next Blizzard game that is not related World of Warcraft.
It’s probably their secret MMO that they’ve been working on.
By Kalcifer on Thursday, July 2nd, 2009 at 2:06 pm
I can kinda see the logic but surely a better name for the expansion would be The Maelstrom or The Great Sundering rather than Cataclysm. Cataclysm just dosen’t sound right.
By dps on Thursday, July 2nd, 2009 at 2:20 pm
blizz plans on making 1 more expansion for WoW to “fill in the gaps” story-wise. It won;t explain eveything nor will it have everything i.e. the emerald dream, grim batol will probably be left out because they’re back story just doesn’t fit on how things have been going so far in WoW(but you’ll never know).
has anyone noticed how quickly there’s another tier and raid content coming…with lich king raid likely in october or november. they’re planning to finish wotlk early next year and bring this last expansion. the next xpac will not have as much content as the other ones, but will close out the WoW mmo franchise within or less then a year of it’s release….as blizz has it’s next big mmo planned for sometime in late 2010 or 1st quarter of 2011.
one more solid year of WoW people…enjoy it!

@dps
I didn’t know you worked for Blizzard and had such knowledge of how Bliizard will drop their biggest money maker in the history of their company!
Really though that’s a little extreme of an idea. I’d reconsider those increasingly large jumps to conclusions you made.
By Veldoran on Thursday, July 2nd, 2009 at 2:50 pm
i have to agree with DarkDoctor on that one, i mean if you look at WC and SC they are all still around even since the release of WoW they are still doing fine and still releasing new expansions and stuff. i dont see blizzard just dumping wow and all of its 12 million players as soon as they secret MMO is released and then expecting that all those 12 million players will jump right into the new game. I don’t see world of warcraft ending for a long time. just my opinion though.

“The cataclysm is the Greek expression for the Deluge, from the Greek kataklysmos, to ‘wash down’” -Taken from wikipedia.
This could very well be a hint to a possible expansion set in the Maelstrom.

Yeh and along with the Horde - Alliance “truce” being broken after The Battle of Undercity, we will really see some major cataclysmic catastrophe *dramatic music*
BIG JUMP TO CONCLUSION: Maelstrom = Tomb of Sargeras (or Tomb of Sargeras’ Avatar) = BIG FIGHT COMING!
By Littleraven on Thursday, July 2nd, 2009 at 3:21 pm
@dps
there is no way that the next expansion after lich king is gonna be the last one….theres still the emerald dream, maelstrom AND im sure that they will cap it off with some kind of burning legion expansion where we go and fight the legion more so than in burning crusade
as for what everyone is saying it could be WoW related but i really dont think it is…just because its coming from blizzard doesnt make it automatically WoW related,,,im leaing more toward it being their next MMO but who knows….we will find out in time

What’s the matter? Y’all to chicken to yell at Dorkins for being FIRST? Here I’ll do it:
Dorkins your an idiot, who cares if you were first, jist ’cause you work for PL, don’t mean squat!!!!!
LOL, j/k bro. Figured since every1 is always bitchin and moanin because some1 typed “FIRST”, but to skurred to bitch and moan because you did it.
Anyways, back on subject, that would be a possible X-Pack. I mean for noobs such as myself who didn’t start playin till jist b4 TBC was released, and I jist started readin the War of the Ancients books. That would help out alot with tying in the lore from Warcraft and WoW without havin to go out and get Warcraft and levellin thru it to get the lore from it.

Ya know, all the big rumor threads on mmo and the forums are starting to come true with this news. i can see it now- Word of Warcraft: The Great Cataclysm
“You’ve faced impossible odds and put an end to the Scourge and the Lich King for all time. While the heavy tolls of war set in, as well as mourners for the lost, something much darker and sinister lurks beneath the tides. Queen Azshara, former queen of the Night Elves 10,000 years ago, has made herself known and is out to finish what she had started. The queen plans to use the Maelstrom’s power to recreate the portal which will bring about the destroyer of worlds, Sargeras, into this world. This time, she has no plans to fail.
With Malfurion lost in the Emerald Dream, adventurers are in a race against time to save their world. they must venture into the realm of the Emerald Dream, and free Malfurion from the nightmare. He is the only hope for closing the portal”

first of all octaviax WOW that sounds epic. as muc has i hate to think that blizz would be dumb enough to leave all thse loose ends i fear that thier may be some truth to this but even after blizz is done with WOW it will stil be around for a long time but even if blizz trying to speed up and end WOTLK early why are they so desprate for recruiting new members just earlier this week i commented about how by this time in 2007 we alrleady new teh about WOTLK but the cataclysm sounds more liek a book tittile instead of name of a game it is my fear taht blizz is going for a full blow out their laying all cards on teh tabele everything they had they are giving it to us in the next expenchion and then its plain all WOW and a new MMO on teh new MMO on its way up well atleast ill be a veteran in the next MMO i wasnt their for any oiof the WC games i aonly heard of star craft when diablo three was released like many others i joined WOW right before BC atleast this one il lbe their from the gako i read somewhear that blizz is working on a new arena that they started back at wow release never finished it and that blizz is working on a new COT instance something involving midvh as far as i know hyjal still isnt finished sure we can go to the 10,000 mount hyjal but not to present one it doesnt seem like blizz is going to go the exra mile to keep WOW alive its to early to say anything really but oen thing is for sure thsi is going to be intresting to see what blizz decides to do

I remember when they first announced The Burning Crusade as the “first” expansion. I put a post on our guild website about the quoted word and put out that I can see the last expansion taking characters to 100. I think there will be 2 more X-Pacs, not one. If there’s more than 2, that’s even better. The devs have talked about more hero classes. I can’t see them just releasing 1 more.
My 2 gold (my opinions are worth more than copper).
By Felaryn on Thursday, July 2nd, 2009 at 8:46 pm
If they do bring in the cataclysm, there are some factors that are almost garunteed to be brought in:
1). -Goblins- Lots of em. Their home city is called Undermine, located on the island Kezan, which is in the southern seas of Azeroth near the maelstrom. This could be the next expansion’s main city, like Shattrath and Dalaran.
2). -The Broken Isles- The tomb of Sargeras is on these islands, which were raised from the sea floor by Gul’Dan. This could go along with a theme of Queen Azshara trying to summon Sargeras.
3). -Naga- Come on, this goes without saying. Possibly a faction such as the Scryers who have seen what would happen if Azshara summons Sargeras to Azeroth
4). -Murlocs- There is simply no way to leave them out of a Great Sea/Maelstrom expansion. it’s just not possible.
5). -The Great Sundering- This would be a great caverns of time instance. It would incorporate The very origin of the Great Sea itself, and could also involve the betrayal of Illidan and the creation of the World Tree on top of Mount Hyjal.
6). -Many Islands- There are Islands shown on the world map and referenced in the RPG and books that could be used, such as the South Seas islands, Tel Abim, Hiji, Plunder Isle (which contains the Bloodsail Buccaneers’ main base, opening tons of new content), Zandalar, Gillijim’s Isle (It’s really an island, I’m not making that up), and the Island of Doctor Lapidis. Among these may or may not be an unknown island known by Krasus that was the site of an unnamed tragedy, and now is haunted by dead souls.
I know this is very unlikely but I still feel compelled to put it in this list
7). -Pandaria- Home of the famous Pandaren, this would instantly become a favorite location for thousands of players. Supposedly it won’t be added for political reasons, but we can still hope for it.
These are just a few possibilities for content, and It would be really fun to have a series of islands only connected by ships, not flight paths. There could be battles with pirates, water mounts, tons of new minipets, really fun instance possibilities… the list just goes on and on.

anyone ever just think that maybe they are doing all this to see how much hype they can get up and it turn out to be nothing at all?
By Sean on Thursday, July 2nd, 2009 at 10:13 pm
I think Pandaren will be in the expansion after the Maelstrom.
I think they’ll be a playable race. As will some form of Wolvar. And I think Pandaria will be the Azuremyst Isle of the Pandaren.
Just my 2 copper.
By Nebyula on Thursday, July 2nd, 2009 at 11:38 pm
I hear rumors that bliz wont make pandaren playable because of th chinese player base.
By Euphony on Thursday, July 2nd, 2009 at 11:48 pm
I think that the idea that this hints at a “Great Sea” expansion is very plausible, and wouldn’t be too hard to create (not talking about programming and stuff) because a lot of the lore and ideas are already there. Also, as much as I would LOVE to play a panda, I highly doubt that it’ll ever be implemented (not for “political reasons”, lets use some logic here: Tauren are cows, which are sacred animals to the Hindu. Anyways, since when do a lot of Chinese people think it’s offensive to kill a panda?). I remember reading somewhere that blizzard wanted to implement them into the original 8 races, but the guy who invented Pandarians wouldn’t allow it. Too bad, but I guess we can dream
P.S. lol @ dorkins, you cheater xD

I think Cataclysm is a poor name, why not call it like some previous posters have said Maelstrom or Great Sundering as this is more in line with the story.
Also i hope this isnt the last expansionas there is so much lore space to fill, okay so this one may include the maelstrom and sargeras’ tome but what about the emerald dream and grim batol.
Hopefully they will release two more expansions before ending the franchise.

there has to be at least 2 more xpacs one to deal with the maelstrom and sargaras and 1 to deal with the emerald dream and Deathwing. also i do believe we will have to kill the leader of the bronze dragon flight because he is also teh elader of the infinite dragon flight, he saw his own death and is trying to alter time to save himself.. there is deathwing, uldum, grim batol and the countries in wow that cant be played in.. there is alot of things that need to be covered.

Thats Awsome! I have often wonder what the point of the giant vortex in the middle of the map was and if Blizzard decides to use that as a point for their next expansion for WoW then im sure we will see some cool new Characters and Monsters that are lurking down there. And I wonder what they will do with the Emerald Dream because iv played like WC3 and i never heard about them having to do with the maelstrom so…
Very Interesting!

I think the name Cataclysm fits quite well when looking at it from a different perspective. Now that WOW has the COT they can do whatever they want, hence they can actually have the players go back in time to when the cataclysm happened , and maybe help nightelves defeat the Burning Legion. If it were happening all around you, and not looking back on it thousands of years later, than it would be a cataclysm, and not so much a maelstrom. This would also give players the oppurtunity to meet characters like Malfurion, and Illidan Stormrage, Deathwing, Rhonin in action, Cenarius and countless others that we have heard/read about. Finally the magnitude of the battles during this period would be phenominal, with deities, and Luitenants in the Burning Legion and powerful magic weilding high elves….sounds to me to be pretty Cataclysmic…just my opinion though.
By cocopuff on Sunday, July 5th, 2009 at 10:59 am
pun the problem with this is anything you do in the past will effect the future so far the only reason we went bck intime is to stop the infinite dragon flight and make sure the timeline go onnormal an unchanged thrall ascaping and ecoming leader fo the orcs the black portal opening burning legion defeated at the mount hyjal arthas destroys strath
By evilnancyreagan on Sunday, July 5th, 2009 at 12:39 pm
It is perhaps testament to Blizzard’s story-telling ability that, even before the launch of the second content patch of the latest expansion, they have us already questioning what is going to happen in the next chapter. Maybe it’s simply all of the subliminal messages that are embedded in all of the quest text (Thrall says, “BUY MORE TRADING CARDS”). Either way this most certainly is not the first time the future expansions of World of Warcraft were the topic of discussion (and probably not the last). However, the fate of Azeroth and her many denizens may have been entirely written before any player even set foot into the World of Warcraft.
Many people claim that the entire life-span of the World of Warcraft franchise was planned out during the original conceptual phase. The story is set to unfold across a total of 5 expansions, with a final a level cap of 100 and climaxing with the defeat of the lord of the Burning Legion, Sargeras. Across the internet, in nearly every thread relating to the future of WoW there is always mention to a fabled list. Essentially, this list is supposed to be the list of every expansion ever to be made for the World of Warcraft. Allegedly, this list has been circling before WoW even launched, as far back as 2003 however, the earliest instance I could locate was this:
http://wow.allakhazam.com/forum.html?forum=21;mid=119012268058738816;num=24
Posted on September 17th 2007, it is most certainly not evidence that this list existed prior. However, posted over a year before the launch of Wrath of the Lich King, the accuracy of the Northrend set is worth noting. With the amount lore and content presently existing throughout the entirety of the Warcraft universe (computer games, books, table-top/ pen and paper games) an expansion centered around the characters and events involved in the Maelstrom and Emerald Dream would seem very plausible. As the zones included in the list would concur.
This is quite a bit of speculation however, and a fact we all can agree upon is that Blizzard is good at keeping things under wraps. They may very well take us all by surprise and the next expansion could be a Flintstone-Jetsonsesque cross-over where where our Pandaren Marines are pitted against the forces of the Zergling Deathknights lead by none other than the Lord of Terror himself, Diablo and his lieutenants the Lost Vikings. Blizzard does like surprises…
So, is this information actually some small glimpse into the future of the world of Warcraft or simply some elegantly crafted fanboyism, dredged from the annals of Warcrat lore? It is ultimately up to you the be the judge of that. However, It is (at it’s very least) food for thought and that’s what we’re looking for.
By dennis on Sunday, July 5th, 2009 at 7:01 pm
this might be the next expansion but im not sure. It definatly will not be the last one since there is still the Emerald dream and stuff like that. Not to mention all the old gods have not been found so there might be more expansions after that. There better be… or else >:O

why is everyone so convinced it will be the last xpack? I read an interview not too long ago (sorry I can’t find it now or I would add a link) hinting that Blizz do indeed plan to raise the level cap to 100 before they close the book on WoW & it was also mentioned that they may not always be 10 levels each time, so, what does this mean?
Well maybe they are planning several smaller xpacks raising the cap by 5 lvls each, or perhaps they are planning one more huge expansion with a jump of 20 lvls. I would hope for the former because as I’m sure most of you do, I prefer to get the leveling out of the way quickly & get to raiding, This would also make good sense from a business point of view because it means Blizz could afford to reduce the size of their development team on WoW & move forward with the new project while still keeping the franchise ticking over & adding new content a little at a time to keep people interested.
It’s all speculation at this point, but as others mentioned I can’t imagine Blizzard completely dropping WoW in favor of a new MMO while they still have 13+ million paying customers.
My money would be on a smaller xpack (possibly maelstrom based) before the new game is released & then one or two more after that to kind of wean people off WoW & nudge them in the direction Blizz want them to go
By Icey on Thursday, July 9th, 2009 at 12:40 pm
There’s no way Blizzard would ever kill off WoW just because a new MMO is coming out. This game is one of the most successful cash cows in the history of gaming, and that will take precedent over everything. If it’s still making tons of money, they will support it until it doesn’t. Everquest 2 is still issuing expansion packs, for example, and it’s not even on the same scale as the WoW success. So it is possible you will see WoW run in parallel with the new MMO, until it’s apparent it won’t be making money anymore.
In addition to their subscriber base, Blizzard makes a ton of money through secondary channels like MMO merchandise like clothing, toys, and their card game, just a few examples.
On top of this, with the WoW movie coming out, this may push their subscriber base to an all-time high. Look at the South Park effect, and that exposure pales in comparison with the amount of new recruits a movie could bring in.
The amount of content dedication Blizzard seems to be bringing to WoW seems higher than anytime I can remember. It’s as if they are shoring up the franchise for an even longer future than originally anticipated.
By Duriin on Friday, July 10th, 2009 at 2:23 pm
I have read (and I wish I had the link to prove it) and I have heard a past Blizzcast podcast they put out, that they plan to move forward with Deathwing and Sargeras for sure.
To me, that Screams at least 2 more expansions and in my opinion, Deathwing will not be involved with the Maelstrom (unless they show him in a COT flashback) and Sargeras might make an end game appearance, if only like Kil’jaeden in the Sunwell. Sargeras is destined to have his own expansion and will be the final battle (if not one with the Old God(s)).
So we can count on at least these two huge baddies showing up in the near future for WOW.
Azshara is still alive and well as everyone knows. They won’t finish WOW unless she is dealt with.
It wouldn’t surprise me however, if Deathwing is somehow linked to the Emerald Nightmare or is the cause of it.
I also used to believe that they were done bringing us new playable races but they might bring one more round, with the rest for each expansion being Heroic Classes.
Some thoughts to chew on. I’m totally stoaked personally. I want to get to Icecrown and find out what happens next. And btw, Undermine definitely going to be the neutral city for the Maelstrom exp. I can feel it.

With Malfurion lost in the Emerald Dream, adventurers are in a race against time to save their world. they must venture into the realm of the Emerald Dream, and free Malfurion from the nightmare. He is the only hope for closing the portal”
In reality, this is not that unrealistic. Now that Blizz has mastered some of the game mechanics in WotLK with events (like Battle For UC and Wrathgate) that can be overlayed in phases so as not to apply to all players. Be using the Bronze Aspect to time travel to the time of the Sundering. This would allow for Blizzard to rebuild almost the entire game with new content utilizing the infrastructure already in place. This would allow you to access areas like Grim Batol, or Stromguard
Me personally (it’s geek time), I think a very nice epic raid could be made out of the Emerald Dream, using the four existing world dragons. Hell..they are already re-vamping Ony. They could make it similar to Sarth in that the level of dificulty (and loot) is determined by how many of the world dragons are defeated. “You must defeat all four world dragons within 10 seconds of each other.” Imagine the fun of splitting and coordinating your raid across that many locations. Once a world dragon is defeated….that particular group goes through the portal and receives a specific buff that will be needed by the entire raid when they all phase together at the final boss. All 4 buffs and you get the uber loot….just one buff cuz yer too damn lazy to try and kill all 4? Meh…you can have 24 slot bag at least.
Ok…I’ll shut up now…

Well the “warcraft” story is WAAAY to big for blizzard to try to fit it into the game Blizzard has really poorly shown the Titans which are the MAIN thing on warcraft, so I`m pretty sure they`ll at least drop 2 xpacks or a huge one, since sargeras is a must… If you say Ulduar equal Titans your wrong Ulduar is the prison of Yogg-Saron althought titans were involved it did not got into the deeper meaning bretayal of Sargeras etc etc… Also like other people are saying Emerald Dream is freaking extra 500mb on my hardrive if Blizzard wasn`t gonna use it they would have removed it by now its been on the game since the Live Realese in 2004.

I think blizzard have a sort of Betrayal quest set out to allow these races from the burning legion
By CTT89 on Monday, August 17th, 2009 at 1:29 am
I think that it would be cool to fly in all countries. dont think that it would be that hard to do. make it where when the opposite faction flies over the enemies main cites (ie stormwind and such) that there would be a warning saying something of the nature, you have been locked on, yada yada yada. then said flyer gets dismounted or screwed by AA fire from balista or something…dunno. and about that new xpack…i think they should make it where the two factions are demolished or disbanned. and in doing so allowing the players to choose who they want to join. imagine Gnome and troll fighting together, not each other. just sayin.

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm is the next expansion for World of Warcraft. Dark and forgotten threats that have long stayed out of sight have finally arrived on our shores, unleashing a cataclysmic event upon Azeroth and now preparing more nefarius plans to take it back.
Level Cap
The level cap in the next expansion will be slightly lower than expected this time around; 85.
This suggests Blizzard wants more room for expansions before hitting the level 100 cap. With less leveling to do (along with the revamped leveling listed below likely to increase the speed and ease of leveling), leveling a new race remains appealing for new and existing players alike.
Leveling from 80-85 should be a much bigger deal, the idea is to make sure that gaining a level really means something and doesn’t make you feel like you just have 4 more levels to go.
New Classes
Cataclysm doesn’t introduce any new classes to the game. Instead, Blizzard have offered more race and classes combinations to players. The Some of these have alreadly been datamined from the 3.2.2 Test Realms. The An Injured Colleague quest and it’s new Night Elf counter-part help to introduce the lore for these new race and class combinations, so we can probably expect to see more of these for some of the less traditional ones.
- Human Hunter
- Orc Mage
- Night Elf Mage
- Dwarf Mage
- Blood Elf Warrior
- Dwarf Shaman
- Undead Hunter
- Tauren Paladin
- Tauren Priest
- Gnome Priest
- Troll Druid
New Races
The events of the cataclysm has caused two new races to seek new allies. The Goblins for the Horde and the Worgen for the Alliance.
Goblins
Deathwing once again sought the services of the goblins, as slaves. Unable to refuse such an offer, the goblins were enslaved by him. A large group have resisted however. With their previous homes devastated by the cataclysm, they escaping to an island off the coast of The Barrens. As they strive to recover, they come across an Orc captured on an Alliance ship and rescue him. The Orc turns out to be none other than Thrall himself, and in return offers the Goblins a place within the Horde. These events are carried out in a quest line, allowing players to experience first-hand the reasons behind the Goblins’ shift from neutrality.
Worgen
The cataclysm has cracked open the Greymane Wall, finally revealing what has happened to the kingdom of Gilneas and its citizens. With the Worgen curse taken hold, they have found a partial cure, allowing thme to retain their Human minds even when transformed. Venturing forth from Gilneas and seeking help from the Alliance, they have decided to join them, to combat the new threats of Cataclysm.
Gilneas will make extensive use of the phasing system (much like the Death Knight starting area), to show what happened while the kingdom was cut off from the rest of the world and lead up to present day.
Worgens will have two forms, a Worgen form and a Human form. Players will be able to customise the look of both forms.
New Content
Cataclysm will be the first expansion not to introduce a new continent, instead making use of previously unreleased zones and revamping existing ones.
Classic Azeroth Revamp
A cataclysmic event caused by Deathwing and Azshara will change the face of Azeroth as we know it. Most of the new content for Cataclysm will take the form of a revamped Azeroth, taking advantage of newer additions to WoW such as phasing and daily quests. Most of the quests and mobs in the classic zones will also be redesigned to make leveling less painful. With the revamp, a greater narritive and sense progression will be offered to players. Some zones and dungeons will change drastically to fit this, e.g.,
The Barrens will be split into two separate zones of two different level bands.
Azshara will become a low level (~10-20) zone.
Some of the zones like the Thousand Needles will be flooded.
Durotar is wrecked and apparently Orgrimmar could be destroyed. A new Orc city is rebuilt over the course of the expansion.
Gnomeregan will be part of the expansion as well and gnomes might be able to reclaim their capital. (The last part is still unconfirmed)
Wailing Caverns will be become a lush tropical area as a result of the druid’s magic.
The Blackrock Spire will erupt and a new version of Blackrock Mountains will be available, apparently Ragnaros will be back too.
In the aftermath of the cataclysm, and the new conflicts on the horizon relief efforts can be found in many zones and new open PvP areas similar to Lake Wintergrasp.
Flying in Azeroth
Part of the redesign of the Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor is the introduction of flying to the two continents, allowing access to many new areas and quicker travelling across the large continents.
Classic Dungeon Revamp
Redesigning Onyxia’s Lair in Patch 3.2.2 was just the first step. As most of the leveling will take place in revamped areas of Azeroth, so too will the dungeons, allowing players to use them to level from 80 to 85.
Unreleased Zones & Dungeons
With the addition of flying mounts to Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms and the redesign of many zones, most of the previously unreachable or incomplete zones will now be made available to players. This is where most of the new content from 80 to 85 will take place. Some of these are,
Hyjal (present)
Gilneas - The Worgen starting Zone.
Uldum
It is unclear if the old Goblin locations such as Kezan and Undermine will be included in Cataclyms with the revelation of the goblins’ plight, but several new islands have also been risen from the seas by the events of Cataclysm, some on the backs of giant sea turtles and whales, with the addition of several underwater zones.
Characters and Events
Deathwing
Deathwing the Destroyer / Neltharion the Earth-Warder will play a major role in Cataclysm. Having been driven mad by Old God whisperings and turning against his own kind only to be fail in his attempts, Deathwing has sunk into the shadows. While the Horde and the Alliance were busy fighting back the Burning Legion only to then be beset with the Scourge, he has been lurking and moving things into place. After Lady Sinestra’s failed attempts to create a Twilight Dragonflight, he again retreated to Grim Batol and succeeded where she failed. With his results seen in the Obsidian Sanctum, he has finally created the supreme Dragonflight he sought and plans to unleash it upon the world. But what of the Old Gods’ sway over him?
Azshara
Queen Azshara will also play a major part in Cataclysm. Unknown to many mortal races, long forgotten by others, and believe to be dead by her own kind, she has not been dormant in depths of the Maelstrom. Having those around her transformed by the Old Gods into Naga after her failure in the War of the Ancients, she has become far more powerful and a greater threat than she once was. Not content with just Nazjatar and the depths of the sea, Azshara seeks to reclaim power and reign once again. With the true plan behind Lady Vashj’s support of Illidan remaining a mystery we do not know what hand Azshara has yet played. The big question remains, is she now serving her “saviors”, the Old Gods?
The Cataclysm
I’m still not sure who is the true end boss of Cataclysm is, but the cataclysm appears to have been caused by attempts to incantation to summon extremely powerful beings using an ancient incantation by Deathwing and Azshara. They’re both very powerful, but the cataclysm itself suggests something more powerful is behind it, perhaps their shared past of Old God influence?
The Guardian of Tirisfal
Malfurion Stormrage will be returning to Azeroth to aid in the creation of the new Guardian of Tirisfal - Thrall! Med’an’s role in these events is currently unknown.
The New (New) Horde
Thrall will hand over the leadership of the Horde to Garrosh Hellscream, while he serves as a coordinator for both the Horde and Alliance forces in and effort to combat the new threat of the Naga and Black Dragonflight. Without Thrall to keep Garrosh in check, he declares open war on the Alliance. In the political upheaval Cairne Bloodhoof is implicated as a traitor to the Horde and murdered by Garrosh. Cairne’s son Baine takes over as the new Tauren chieftan. This could explain why Baine was removed from the game in Patch 3.2.2, you can find more information about this in Ahmo Thunderhorn - replacement for Baine Bloodhoof?

Figured I would attempt to put things in order even if I am totally off on it. First of all, the new races and classes that make no sense… Well the races you will probably need a level 60 minimum character to unlock them. As for the weird combinations, they are most likely Hero Classes for those races. You will probably only be allowed to have 1 per server, per race.
As for this last expansion, (if it is even the next expansion), will probably have all three of the major story lines in it. It will more then likely be split into 4 parts, first dealing with the Maelstrom: This will included the crazy redesign of Azeroth and deal with bringing in the new character races. We will also probably see Thrall leave and Hellscream completely destroy everything he has worked to do. The last of the content of 4.1 will more then likely end introducing The Guardian of Tirisfal.
The 4.2 patch will probably contain the next major story line of Queen Azshara. This patch, (it would stand to reason), will take place both before and after the Cataclysm. Much like some of the content in Wrath. The plot will probably have a lot to do with how Azshara escaped and attempted to reopen the portal, (with the help of Deathwing/Neltharion), which caused the cataclysmic events in the first place. This expansion would naturally introduce one of the new islands that resurfaces in the cataclysm as the new daily grounds much like the Isle of Quel’Danas.
4.3 will, (in all probability), be the last patch that deals with the after math of everything in the past two patches. This will, (one would assume), included Thrall reclaiming his place as the leader of the Horde, (possibly by some heart wrenching speech about how Hellscream’s father didn’t give his life for his son to ruin what The Horde stood for), and possibly a romance between Thrall and Jania happens, which then in turn ends the feud between The Horde and Alliance. Although feuds will inevitably exist, thus we will still have PvP.
Which brings us to 4.4. The Emerald Dream. As any fan boy, (or girl), knows, the Emerald dream is a place of wonder and beauty. An educated guess would be that Horde and Alliance will be able to raid together, (this could be the reason for the introduction of the faction switching), as they are now on the same side, even though factions will most likely still be in tact. However this patch will possibly allow for a common language used by both Horde and Alliance for the low one time cost of 1,000 gold. A 40 man raid will also be made available, but since the Horde and Alliance are now at an uneasy truce and fighting against The Nightmare and not each others factions, the raid will possibly require 20 Horde and 20 Alliance.
I should have said this off the hop, but any similarities to the new World of Warcraft expansion, (true or not), are completely speculative and reflect only my views on how I see the game going.

I wonder who will blizz make the outmost powerfull from the lore at the end of all lose end and story line. So far Arthas was known as the outmost powerfull of all time. Anyone could live with the tought that he will become obsolete?
I think even if arthas would be seperated from the Frostmourne, Redeme from the grasp of the Lich King will. He could still jump in at Sargaras fight to claim its powers what he hungers since birth.
The last thing I expect is that blizz simply throw a target dummy before us that drops loot and tag it with an Arthas name.
Leaving Arthas out of the picture and plungering in two mayor content without him would mean as a Story line that thick as Arthas would have a sideline out from it and become even bigger and the original wanish? There was NOT any precedence for such EVER!

I highly doubt this has anything to do with the next expansion. I think it’s something to do with the next Blizzard game that is not related World of Warcraft.
It’s probably their secret MMO that they’ve been working on.”
