NBC Tackles WoW Lingo

Being the repressed, socially-awkward gamer who lives in his mother’s basement and fears the sun, I watch a lot of TV.  To be honest, only one of the cliche descriptions fits me.  I will leave it up to the Internet Sleuths to figure out which.  My point is that no matter how many people continue to sign-up for World of Warcraft, or snap up those Nintendo Wiis, gaming, especially on a computer, is still largely seen as a nerdy hobby that should be shunned.

Enter in the mainstream media’s latest attempt at “understanding” gamers with NBC’s take on our “secret society.”  Nicole Riley is the women in charge of the horribly misinformed and unintentionally hilarious person piece.  I don’t mean to rag on her reporting, but I highly doubt she thought it was going to win any awards.  In actuality, she, and her boyfriend, probably had some fun putting the clip together.  Especially the boyfriend.

Riley claims that Jay Hollanda, her beau, is “ranked in the top ten out of 12 million” players for World of Warcraft.  What?  Where did that stat come from?  Assuming I just may be out of touch with the PvP leagues or sponsored PvE guilds I did a quick Google Search for Jay Hollanda.  You know what I found?  Links to the same video above, or to discussions about how ridiculous it is.

Sounds to me like Jay may be playing himself up so he can stay home and cruise by on Riley’s career.

It gets better, way better.  Riley sits down to play the game and quickly realizes that she needs help. Hollanda informs her that “I need help” in WoW-speak is really “LFM 25 Nex 2 more tanks 2 more DKs.”  Lawlz.

Personally, it seems that I - and ProjectLore’s Glossary - need to work on our WoW, because I have never heard the reference to a “Timmy” in WoW or seen pwnzer spelled in such an odd fashion.  Perhaps it is just his server, or he’s so good at the game that everyone follows his lead.  Hollanda isn’t playing his girlfriend entirely, he does seem to know a good amount about our favorite MMORPG.

In all fairness, much of the piece was probably trumped up by production, like a good reality show - get this, they aren’t real!  It’s obviously true that we do have our own lingo, but doesn’t every hobby?  Either way, this is a must see for all WoW players, so be sure to send it to your friends and post it in your guild forums.  Whether they meant it for a laugh or not, it certainly got me ROFLing.  Just check it out and let us know what ya think.

At least none of my family lives in the Bay Area.  If they did, I would expect my grandfather to call and try to speak “gamer” to me…

Edit: It looks like YouTube had to take the video down, but we’ve updated with the video from the NBCbayarea site.

    Wow that’s hilarious xD
    ”LFM 25 Nex 2more tanks 2 more dk’s”…. srsly?
I have a hard time believing he’s among the top 10 over 12 MILLION WoW players. He probably /bubblehearth’s when things get nasty lol

By Shaun on Wednesday, February 4th, 2009 at 2:59 pm

    kek

By Naasuk(Andrew) on Wednesday, February 4th, 2009 at 3:05 pm

Argh, people always make us look bad.

By Dediare on Wednesday, February 4th, 2009 at 3:06 pm

“secert socity” WTF?? do the think we have a cult or something… lame. And yes if your looking for a pro at the pharses of wow just take a look at me (although you cant) i know pretty much all them but i tend to type out my words fully not really even using the “pharses” hehe kinda lame of me too.

By Sathas on Wednesday, February 4th, 2009 at 3:09 pm

    kek kek kek

    this is fucking hilarious

By Dediare on Wednesday, February 4th, 2009 at 3:11 pm

by the way i just want to add that i highly doubt hes one of the “top ten players” he wasnt even teir geared yet, and about the crap he said like ponzer…. uhhh no one says that… sorry to say man, and no one says kek when they laugh they say- lol, not kek, however if your ally horde’s lol to you is kek so hes kinda right, but not really. Dream on, on being top ten dude

By Stiverton on Wednesday, February 4th, 2009 at 3:12 pm

This guy is a huge tool, and this reporter is a joke. Who does a report on her boyfriend?

By Alex F on Wednesday, February 4th, 2009 at 3:25 pm

You know this was meant as joke, come on…

They were just adding a filler to the news report which they hadn’t filled yet. Maybe she mentioned WoW from her BF and they decided to do a funny, haha, report.

By Laeltis on Wednesday, February 4th, 2009 at 3:35 pm

haha, this made me laugh. The things is, I actually try to prove this shit to people. Playing WoW actually increased my social skills, typing skills, math, and linguistics(spelling/grammer) I use some phrases when I goof-off, but for the most part I type everything out. I guess it’s the RPer in me. The only REAL part about WoW that they got right is that we have a language of our own. Besides, who the fuck talks to thier girlfriend about WoW in the WoW terms? I just talk normal, and rarely bring it up(fights start)

By Kwarass on Wednesday, February 4th, 2009 at 3:40 pm

Honestly….12 million of us out there and we have to rely on this tool and his reporter girlfriend to represent us?

By Zerbet on Wednesday, February 4th, 2009 at 3:43 pm

    It’s a level.

    I give it a Fail.

By PatrickD on Wednesday, February 4th, 2009 at 3:46 pm

The real payoff is the final word of the clip.
    “What?”

…because that’s what I was thinking. Who does a report on their lazy boyfriend?

He probably told her he was in the top ten and she believed it.

By Dovehill on Wednesday, February 4th, 2009 at 3:47 pm

Well, I’m gonna start using “Timmy” at least :-).

    kek, pwnzor!

By Pauldy on Wednesday, February 4th, 2009 at 3:52 pm

Something very weird he starts off with we one shot malygos last night, WTF? There is more to this story, than this story. I also felt awkward her lying and saying his in top ten ranked out of 12 million that was epic failure on her part.

By HerofTime on Wednesday, February 4th, 2009 at 3:55 pm

Okay…. gamers aren’t a “secret society” (hate to break it to ya) and whoever says crap like “5 capped AV today” when asked how their day was desperately needs a life. This jerk makes anyone whoever picked up a headset and mouse look like a lunatic. Don’t stereotype WoW players!!

By Alii on Wednesday, February 4th, 2009 at 4:18 pm

So. Painful. I couldn’t get through the video because misinformation makes my skin crawl. Even if it’s supposed to be ‘funny’ it still hurts.

By Radament on Wednesday, February 4th, 2009 at 4:24 pm

seriously i have never heard anyone say kek before……. and yea this is a huge stereotype of comp gamers although his girl is super fine still doesnt make up for whatever this guy was trying to prove

By Aguzar (Darkspear EU) on Wednesday, February 4th, 2009 at 4:29 pm

    bring back jenkins

By churchill on Wednesday, February 4th, 2009 at 4:30 pm

I am amazed by this actually being taken seriously by anoyone, gamer or not. I have also never heard anyone say ‘ponzor’ ‘timmy’ or ‘kek’ (besides when i hear horde players say lol), and when it comes to real life, who needs to use shortened versions of words? a person would have to be amazingly lazy to say AV in real life, because actually saying alteric valley should not be considerably shorter than ‘av’ and there is also the fact that anyone listening to you that doas not play WoW would think that your an idiot or according to NBC ‘one of the top ten wow players’

By Xhypher on Wednesday, February 4th, 2009 at 4:33 pm

Does that guy have down syndroome or is he just stupid?

By JasonMB on Wednesday, February 4th, 2009 at 4:33 pm

This seems like a bit of an overstatement by the main stream media to keep gamers seem like a secretive group who are these socialy odd people who dont mesh well with normal society.

I cry foul on all the things like this. They are fluff peices to try to connect with local gamers while still making them seem like this underground group that no one can connect with.

By Xhypher on Wednesday, February 4th, 2009 at 4:49 pm

Besides, anyone else notice he’s wearing a tier two helm?

By Ada on Wednesday, February 4th, 2009 at 4:58 pm

This is so ridiculous! They make us look like idiots, and this guy has close to NO CLUE of what he’s saying.

LFM 25 2 tanks 2 death knights? TIMMY? ponzor?!
WHY would you need 25 people for the nexus, and why would u need two tanks and two death knights?

This guy clearly MAY know something…but to me it looks like they took YouTube videos and googled WoW for stuff to make up.

    *shakes head*

By Xhypher on Wednesday, February 4th, 2009 at 5:00 pm

    0:50

By Grant on Wednesday, February 4th, 2009 at 5:04 pm

    KEK KEK KEK!!

By sevink on Wednesday, February 4th, 2009 at 5:52 pm

I saw this video yesterday, very funny stuff. I’m just as baffled as the rest of you when it comes to the “lingo” he used. You can tell he does play WoW, but I wonder if someone else tried to spell the words because those are deff wrong. Plus half of them I’ve never heard of which is funny. Bad reporting is bad.

By opus on Wednesday, February 4th, 2009 at 6:20 pm

Sadly this person exists…. His characters name is Oompa sadly he does have the ashes of al’ar mount but being in the top 10 this guy is not… he has a fair bit of achievements and a decent 5v5 team but other then that he is nothing more then a person who got his 15 mins of wow fame and if you think he is top 10 material check his armory account… he just got his 25 badges of valor 1/29/2009 now im not entirely sure if he does alot of heroics or not but… if you can one shot maly then im sure you have more then a fair share of 25 man epics… thats just my take…

By Thasfnul on Wednesday, February 4th, 2009 at 6:38 pm

Least she did 1 thing right.
Caps lock when asking for help, she must have a hidden talent.

And about the tier 2, could just be his way of showing he was/is a “true” old school raider and not just one that got that achivement at 60+.

1-shotting Malygos could just be his group didn’t wipe and not that it were their first time doing him.

    My 2 cents.

By Nalamin on Wednesday, February 4th, 2009 at 6:43 pm

Lol look at 0:16 he is in an ally party but says kek is lol i know thats what it comes over as if your a horde talking to an ally player but really hes ally and we all just say lol.

By Joenips on Wednesday, February 4th, 2009 at 8:21 pm

    this dude is fucking dumb

By Max on Wednesday, February 4th, 2009 at 8:24 pm

    Wait a minute…
    lol, rotfl, rofl, lmao…
out of all the possible laugh Abreveations, you choose kek? I only hear “kek” when a damn rouge one shots me in the bgs…
ANd LFM nex tank blah blah, That’s not gonna get you help, that’s gonna get you some PO’d people who wanted a “nex” run… whatever that is, you could say Malygos but I thought Naxx at first…

By Rokh on Wednesday, February 4th, 2009 at 10:50 pm

    His Armory:

anyone else want to fucking punch this guy in the face?

    what a fucking Timmy.

Im sorry, wait, what a fucking annoying piece of “bra” shit.

By Rokh on Wednesday, February 4th, 2009 at 11:07 pm

His character name is Oompa from Greymane, here’s his response to all the trolls, people making fun of him, ect.

    http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=14894789853&postId=148934396449

Apparently the whole thing was a joke, that got aired after the Super Bowl.

By Süb of Baelgun on Wednesday, February 4th, 2009 at 11:12 pm

His gear is rather meh, if you ask me. Arena teams are fail, and his gear isn’t even as good as mine, PvE wise.

Most certianly not top 10, nor even top 1000. Also, how does a holy pally melt face in SotA?

By Hatell on Wednesday, February 4th, 2009 at 11:55 pm

Well… WoW does have a few cults. We all should know “Cult of the Damned” by now. (It’s those guys you kill in Icecrown for the dailies.) And I think the Lore guys are killing off the remnants of the “Cult of the Burning Blade” are they not? LOLZ

Seriously though, we are bilingual, Gaming/net speak is a language all it’s own! Heck, I’m still learning my friend’s D&D language. I still have to ask them to let me “take a 20″ on something. XD

By Divine on Thursday, February 5th, 2009 at 2:39 am

Yeah he has the ashes of alar mount, but if you look a little close at his achievements you will see he got it on his very first Kael down. lucky basterd…

By Divine on Thursday, February 5th, 2009 at 2:41 am

Oh and his first Kael down was after 3.0 nerf. definatly top 10 :o

By tyrael_bv on Thursday, February 5th, 2009 at 2:41 am

    I loved the “what” ending

By Ishamyyl on Thursday, February 5th, 2009 at 4:27 am

my favorite part was when the hot chick lied right to our faces
this can be found at 0:32 in the video,

when she said the dude was ranked in the lolTOP TEN OUT OF TWELVE MILLIONlol

By Sardit on Thursday, February 5th, 2009 at 6:33 am

To all you trolls out here, he may be an epic fail where it comes to his statements, ( though honestely he got me laughing, it apperst to be a joke piece to me, with the fixed camera setting, unprofessional edditing. Its just a home vid quality piece that got aired ) But at least he has one fine girlfriend. Come on, do you seriousely thing anyone talks like that at the dinnertable?

By Thothy on Thursday, February 5th, 2009 at 9:06 am

I think I might roll a Dk on his server so I can tell him what a huge tool he is. Satire or not, he blew it baby!

By Raknor on Thursday, February 5th, 2009 at 9:32 am

If this guy is at all as into WoW as they make it seem, it would be logical to assume that he reads various WoW related websites and blogs. Its hilarious to think that not only will he have to deal with the entire WoW community bashing him, but also the ridicule and humilation on his own server.

Lay into him for me guys. :D

By Red on Thursday, February 5th, 2009 at 12:04 pm

    Maximum lulz.
I’m not going to site the SDF to you morons over something so trivial just so you can understand the jokes implied here. But I have to offer at least something, so next time you bash a commercial made for lulz, remember at the end of it all you’re still going to log on wow and this will all be a distant memory. So really? Who cares enough to get upset over this?
My props to this tool and his hot piece of ass girlfriend.
I’m sure he’s out there keking right now.

Want a real wow report? Throw a bunch of clips from the shatner commercial, south parks make love not Warcraft, and some of the leroy Jenkins wipe.
No one would bitch then, I bet.

By Alayea on Thursday, February 5th, 2009 at 4:15 pm

Obviously, this video wasn’t meant to be taken seriously. Its attempt at humor, however, was epic fail.

By Blaith on Thursday, February 5th, 2009 at 9:12 pm

Yeah… people seem to like making WoW players look bad, or they treat us as if we’re some exhibit in a Zoo. A Rare and misunderstood creature, if you will. But, I can see that the guy does know a bit about WoW, but he’s trying way to hard. A “Timmy”? Never in my four years of WoW have I heard that, and, last I checked, one shotted means that you killed in ONE hit. But, meh…

By Boagreis on Thursday, February 5th, 2009 at 9:33 pm

Okay seriously i have a hard time believing he’s in the top 12 million out the 12 million WoW players.
i only use one of the things he said.

By FanofJeff on Thursday, February 5th, 2009 at 9:34 pm

Ugh, watching that was like chewing tinfoil…painful.

By Tezaro on Thursday, February 5th, 2009 at 11:00 pm

wow talk about pro gamer lol….well do what ever makes you feel happy. I always thought people look like total nerds, but he looked normal. Also his wife look fine lol and house looks awesome.

By Rasmus on Friday, February 6th, 2009 at 10:17 am

one of u guys form project lore got that birdie too, soo

WOOT that guy is a human pally! :)

By Zak on Saturday, February 7th, 2009 at 6:00 am

Think the “Timmy” is a reference to the boss from vanilla strat (live side) that spawns in market square and /shouts TIMMY. This was around the time that Timmy was introduced on south park as well

By Caca on Saturday, February 7th, 2009 at 4:07 pm

Hahah omg he called AB in 2 mins… that is soo fucking hard… 40Man WsG!”? omg that is awsome lmao dumbass

shit im the dumb ass now.. capped not called

By qq on Sunday, February 8th, 2009 at 8:11 pm

The most hilarious thing about this vid is that sooo many on this thread atually think theyre serious about him being one of the top ten players, why do you think all facts are wrong?
Why do you think theyre filmin it like a spoof?
Why do you think theyre not serious?

Come on timmys, get a grip of irony and self distance and stop your kewkewing mmmkaj?

One does not simply talk like that to a ‘normal’ person unless you’ve substained some kind of braindmg x_O.

Although a positive thing about this is that many of the biased ppl out there will think all the WoW-nerds are linguistic retarded … which is good caz itll highen the chances of us nerds to get a date(?) yay lol?

By Dumdrakk, Executus on Tuesday, February 10th, 2009 at 11:20 am

I live in a small area and work at one of the TV stations in the area. If they can’t come up with a better story I’m shocked. In all fainress this was maybe a kicker story for the end of the news, but those are shorter than that. It seems that whenever media tries to cover “gamers” they always seem to find the shady people who put us in a bad light. I got hit twice by this, being a fellow NBC affiliate employee this hurts but the gamer in my is crying because our reputation just got “ponzered”.

By Montes on Wednesday, June 17th, 2009 at 10:57 pm

LULZ lol it was a joke so guys please calm down and leave him alone if you cant tell its a joke and take it seriosly then calm down :P im 13 and i can tell its just a joke for lulz this was after the super bowl :D so calm down

By Bianca on Thursday, June 18th, 2009 at 8:28 am

    Wow… That girl is a spaz…

I hate it when they show women like that. As a girl gamer it really ticks me off to see all of my progress being undone by some Brainless Beach Bunny who happens to work at a TV station… -_-
