Much Ado About Mounts

Not Juggy\'s Horseman Mount :(I’m not sure if it’s the recent holiday events, the new achievements system, or something that has been here all along, but it seems the whole world is going crazy about mounts. People want them, want to show them off, and are going to extremely lengths to get them.

The most obvious example is the holiday mounts. Groups of dedicated people are spending hours everyday farming the latest seasonal boss and hoping they will drop the latest mount. First it was the Kodo/Ram now it’s the Horseman mount. I’ll admit, I am one of them, and because I don’t have luck like Juggy, I imagine I will be in SM everyday for the rest of the event.

It doesn’t stop there however! It’s just the tip of the iceberg. With the new achievement system in place lots of folk in my guild have spent tons of gold and farmed tons of rep  to buy every mount they can get their hands on. The goal is the 50 mount achievement, and yet another mount. (A very cool one, given).

While we are on the topic of achievements, the other reason the whole world is farming away inside SM this week is to make sure they get the squashling and the Hallowed title. Not a mount, I know, but guess what you get if you finish all the seasonal event achievements? You guessed it: another mount.

The problem actually predates the newest batch of content. People have been mount obsessed long before this. Rare mounts are certainly nothing new. On the extreme end, there is a friend of mine in my guild that has soloed Stratholme several times every day for the last few months. The reason is the Baron Mount. Rumor is that it is the lowest drop rate in the game, and from the stories I’ve heard I believe it. This is one for the truly dedicated, or truly insane (sorry, Feralface).

Then of course there is the Huntsman Mount, The White Hawkstrider, The Anzu Mount, The Ashes of Alar, The ZG Raptor and Tiger, and the now inaccessible Bear Mount.

While given mounts are really really cool, is it really worth all this time we put into farming them? The are (usually) cosmetic, they don’t improve our ability to down a boss. The are vanity items, but then again, perhaps that is their appeal. What about you? What lengths have you gone to to get a mount? Or are you just happy riding around on your boring faction mount?

I have always wanted loads of mounts but these achivements have made me want even more!!!

By Feralface on Thursday, October 23rd, 2008 at 11:34 am

Yes, I am f*cking nuts for running Strat all these times. However, I did make 5k gold in 8 days selling enchanting mats and BOE blues and got me epic flight form. When the Baron mount becomes mine, I will use it to hump the sh!t out of your puny warhorse, Mr. Bastosa.

    Pokémounts?

By Nylow on Thursday, October 23rd, 2008 at 11:50 am

Well, after yesterday’s hour spent farming HH and killing him 10 times. Yes, 10. daily & quest for each member. All that dropped was the pet & the cloth helm. The rest of the drops was only 2 rings. Horsemans signate & witches band.

To say the least we were upset. I would have been happy with nearly anything else dropping at all, but 10 kills and the rings kept dropping (everyone had them) we couldn’t even pick up the last 4.

I will probably get my five tries tonight, but I think I would rather rep gind for others or at least the Baron’s mount after last nights utter dissapointment.

WoW, what have you done to me…

I’ll admit it, though I am a Paladin I wouldn’t mind getting Baron’s Death Charger, Attumen’s Midnight and The Headless’ “runs in Azeroth, flies in Outland/Northrend” mount. Maybe even the motorcycle… <..>;; And I’ve begun working on vanity pets. I got my chicken from westfall and my sprite darter thing from Feralas. Need to work at the two from Searing Gorge…. Yeesh. I realized I have my work cut out for me until I’m 80!!! O.O!!!!!!!

Honestly I don’t care THAT much about getting special mounts. Yeah it’d be cool if I can get one, but if I can’t, I think I’ll live. The only one I’ve seemed to care about is the horseman’s mount, but running him everyday so far I haven’t seen it drop once :-(. Maybe the strat mount would be cool to try for a couple times…

By Redauroa on Thursday, October 23rd, 2008 at 12:02 pm

Well I am now farming for the mount. Of course no luck. I did get the pet trick or treating maybe the mount will drop out of a goodie bag also. I really dont see me getting the mount since I did not get the brewfest one. Good luck to all of you hunting the mount!!

By grillbar on Thursday, October 23rd, 2008 at 12:12 pm

only got 6 mounts yearh i know i would mutch rather spend time on getting gear that im gonna replace in 3 weeks then mounts that last a life time.
mayb i should start getting my prioritys in check and farm g just got tired of it after doing 16 dailys every day for 20 days but really want the hh mount just cuz you can get all the other mounts any time but hh mount (and sesonal achivement mount) is only a short period of time and its only 1 a year…
but in the end i still want all the mounts its kinda like bragin rights even though everybody els godt it and nice for a change getting tired of my charger witch looks like a armored unicorn from behind (trust me dont look as nice as it sounds) all i know is when wotlk comes i want my choppa

Well, see, I’m a dwarf pally with a racial ram. That’s it. I like it, I’ve stuck with it, and it’s fun. On the ground. Flying mounts are a different matter. I want the Ashes, of course, but until I can get absurdly lucky, I’ll make do with the userandom macro and any flying mounts I can get my grabby dwarven hands on.

By lawman30 on Thursday, October 23rd, 2008 at 12:29 pm

My mount collection started with me wanting to be exalted with Exodar. I wanted to have my gnome riding an elephant. It turned out that after questing I was nearly exalted with the other Alliance factions so I finished them off. I ground out exalted with some Outland factions because I like collecting tabards. When I saw that the Albino Drake was the reward for having 50 mounts I knew what I was going to spend my excess gold on.

It all comes down to what individual players want from the game. I have a friend who grinds the holiday bosses with me because he thinks the fights are fun. I like having him along because he could care less about the mounts and won’t roll on them. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

By Drygo on Thursday, October 23rd, 2008 at 12:35 pm

I think part of the reason everyone is freaking out about the mounts (and pets) right now is so that they can learn each mount/pet in addition to the achievement rewards, once they learn the mount/pet they can just drop the item from what I can tell, therefore they can get novelty mounts/pets and not waste bank space to do so

I’m getting tired of every other person asking me where I got my polar bear mount. Uh…can you not read the flag the murloc is holding? BlizzCon. Get with the program people.

By Mascha on Thursday, October 23rd, 2008 at 1:01 pm

The only mount I’m interested in is one that goes 280% faster than normal speed.

Rare or hard to get mounts just usually equal bragging rights or how effing lucky you got once, but most of them are just cosmetic.

I’d rather farm the gold for the mount that actually does something other than look different.

In the meantime, I’ll stick with my swift hawkstrider and my basic Wyrvyn.

By Woodynz on Thursday, October 23rd, 2008 at 1:13 pm

like many others I was happy with whatever mount I picked up along the way excluding the !!!Neitherdrake!!! (no brain’er must have!) but every tom di*k & harry has them now :o(.

Now that mounts wont be taking up my valuable bag space I may just take up farming these down in my down time.

By tyki mikk on Thursday, October 23rd, 2008 at 1:17 pm

mounts are like cars people want the have the best they can get. btw I love the much ado about mounts title my fav play :P

By Zurellehkan_Runetotem on Thursday, October 23rd, 2008 at 1:26 pm

Lol ATM on my Ret pally i have gotten the horseman’s mount The Kael H MgT hawkstrider, and the brewfest ram :P working my way up the ladder hehe funny thing is i never was ever grinding these items just wanted other stuff the bosses dropped lawl.

By Alayea on Thursday, October 23rd, 2008 at 1:42 pm

I don’t really care for the special mounts. Sure, I did the brewfest boss daily during the entire run, but it was only for the remote. For this event, I’m actually trying for the mount because it actually looks wicked.

I’ll be so glad when the bulk of the season events (brewfest, hallowed, thanksgiving, christmas) is all done with… @_@

By macbethy on Thursday, October 23rd, 2008 at 2:22 pm

Isn’t looking good what in the end WoW is all about?

isn’t grinding for a mount so different from grinding for armour or a new weapon?

    Also they look really cool.

By borroc on Thursday, October 23rd, 2008 at 2:33 pm

The mount achievement is pretty hard being a tauren. I have 39 mounts and I can get 2 more war pvp mounts and the 2 halaa mounts. I have exalted with orgrimmar so I have all the wolves. So for me to get the 50 achievement before wrath is nearly impossible. There is no point in getting rep with Undercity, Darkspear Trolls and Silvermoon. as I am too big to ride these mounts. Hopefully getting the reigns of HH will make the achievement a bit more possibile. Oh and I can get the cenarion hipogryph. If I could get exalted with one other faction it wouldn’t be as hard but now I gotta grind out rare mount drops? lol forget that.

By Urza on Thursday, October 23rd, 2008 at 4:18 pm

As someone that got into the whole speeder thing in SWG I can totally understand the mount obsession… thankfully I’ve yet to see a mount I NEEDED to have. But then again.. I’m too busy getting items I NEEDED to have.. so until then, I’m happy with my vendor mounts. :)

By Gilnid on Thursday, October 23rd, 2008 at 4:34 pm

I’m not big on getting rare mounts, although I would certainly roll on one if I saw it. My big thing is PvP mounts. I have the horse, the ram, the tiger, and even the elekk. I feel like I worked to get them, not just got lucky with a droprate.

By Spudnik on Thursday, October 23rd, 2008 at 5:35 pm

Well the Phoenix mount is just sick, who wouldn’t want that?

By DeathAdder on Thursday, October 23rd, 2008 at 7:09 pm

I really Dont care about mounts. I’m pissed off at the horrid price of the riding training. I havent even got my Epic flyer training. Drives me absolutely bonkers. Though I guess for someone that spends more time on WoW than me, collecting something would be fun, seeing as you can only run the big instances once a week

By XvRavenous on Thursday, October 23rd, 2008 at 10:22 pm

    LOL @ Monkeystick,

PokeMounts LMAO seriously.! i only plan on getting the minimum cause i still need to do more stuff then just get mounts.

By Kastegir on Friday, October 24th, 2008 at 3:21 am

I was obsesed about mounts. Had a lot of them, apend a lot of time getting my Wintersaber tiger. And then the achivement system camalong, and YES a new mount. And now i have 51 mounts, including the Albino drake. The way they put the achivement together killed the fun. Jusy get 50 mounts, dosent matter what kind or what colar, just 50 mounts, so grind a lot of gold and go bye them all, from those fractions your can, and viola, new mount. So sundely im not so hipe about mounts anymore. And no I am not grinding for the hh mount. But the pet, Thats another story, new obsesion.

By Jowen on Friday, October 24th, 2008 at 4:13 am

Great story and project lore is da best n a big fan of it!!! Im thinkin of converting to the server totally rad guild is in and play there…

By Phoenix599 on Friday, October 24th, 2008 at 4:37 am

I’ll be getting more mounts/vanity pets due to the addtion of the Pets tab in the Character window but…I’m not going to obsess about it. My criteria are speed/cheapest price for mounts, and vanity pets as an afterthought. Don’t get me wrong…mounts/pets are a great addtion to the game but…lets talk about…

the Great Brewfest Kodo…probably one of the most annoying mounts ever unleashed upon toons by Blizz. Nothing like scanning the Auction House while a player runs his Kodo in circles just outside the room for the entire 10 minutes that process takes…while your screen bounces up and down and you listen to poom! poom! poom! foot stomps. Thank God my keyboard has a mute button…

By friskydingo on Friday, October 24th, 2008 at 5:40 am

if i could live with only one mount, it would be the mount from sethekk halls. idk y i like it so much, but i do and i used to do runs for it, before people stopped playing pre-newpatch, and was willing to pay 500g to who ever rolled the highest on it. kinda sad, but i gave up and decided to go back with a couple of friends when im 80, if im able to do a 70 heroic as a lvl 80 haha.

By Garviel on Friday, October 24th, 2008 at 7:32 am

I like my faction mount, “Summon Warhorse”, I was just happy to get something after walking all over, and now that I have Crusader’s Aura, the extra speed is nice.

I’m eagerly looking forward to my Epic mount as well.

By Dan on Friday, October 24th, 2008 at 11:21 am

I like having a different mount than everyone else. Currently I am working towards the All Capital cities at Exalted Achievement, then I can buy all the mounts(and that bad ass title) and be pretty close to the 50 mounts. So far I only have Org at Exalted(I’m a BE) and I think Darkspears will be next. I’ve always wanted one of those raptors and the war one just isn’t cutting it.

By Dulica on Saturday, October 25th, 2008 at 10:30 am

My main goal when starting WoW was to get a horse. I’m totally happy with my horse, who I call Chester Copperpot. Sure, I’d like to hit 60 and get a faster horse..but i’m not going crazy while trying to get one. I have seen some awesome flying mounts though…maybe someday!

By Ombrenoire on Monday, October 27th, 2008 at 11:04 am

A guildmate of mine was the first in our guild to get 50 mounts and the covetted Albino Drake. At this rate, I will be next ^_^ 2 factions left to grind up and a few more gold pieces and I’m done.

But on our server I think there are maybe 6 people total who have 50+ mounts. Some from PvP factions (Halaani), others from just insane grinding (Frostsaber).

I won’t say it’s nuts to have so many mounts since I fall into the mix. It is a status symbol to be able to say, “Hey, I earned this mount!”

This coming from the toon who is the proud owner of the Spectral Saber Mount ^_^ (No, was not an eBay card, I actually bought I booster pack and got it.)

By Jeff on Tuesday, October 28th, 2008 at 4:46 pm

As long as I have a mount, I’m happy :)

By Lifedragon on Friday, October 31st, 2008 at 1:19 pm

The deathcharger had its drop rate increased it is now 1/100 instead of 1/5000 kills
