You’ve been staying up-to-date with our news, reading about our excursions and tales in Azeroth and sharing in our knowledge of World of Warcraft for some time now.  But we’ve heard that you want more, you want to know us.  Know what makes us tick, and what makes us love World of Warcraft so much.  Know Thy Blogger will deliver just that.

The More You Know: ProjectLore Edition

The More You Know: Project Lore Edition

What better way to start to get to know someone than to understand the name they selected for online recognition, and the reasons behind the decisions?  Off we go (in alphabetical order).

Amatera (The Cunning Linguist):
If you know anything about Japanese mythology, then you’re probably familiar with the Japanese Sun God, whose name is Amaterasu. Now, I had just finished playing the fantastic video game Okami (whose main character is a lupine manifestation of said diety) around the time that I needed to transfer my rogue to a new server.  Her previous name was already taken, so I had to come up with a new one.

Well, Amaterasu is technically female, and trolls are known for their propensity for worshipping primal gods and goddesses, so I thought it would be a perfect fit. Unfortunately, I wasn’t the only one. It was already being used, as well.  But I still wanted to preserve the essence of the name, so I shortened it to Amatera. The rest is, as they say, history!

While I have several alts at Level 80, the only other one I use with any regularity is my shaman, Nuggnuts. You might have seen him in my Pit of Saron preview not too long ago.

His name comes from a ridiculous marketing push that McDonald’s came up with not too long ago to promote their Chicken McNuggets. The ad campaign featured people obsessed with the little meaty morsels, who “proudly” called themselves “Nuggnuts.” It started out as a joke amongst the officers in my guild until I threatened to create a new character with the same name.

The problem? It was supposed to be a gag, but I ended up liking my shaman so much that I took him all the way to the level cap.

DJTyrant (The Busy Gamer):
I’ve been using DJTyrant as an online/writing name for a while now; it started out at Tyrant (the name of a Star Destroyer in Star Wars TCG). DJ was tacked on later as my interest in the music game Beatmania IIDX grew. I’ve used it on so many sites that it has pretty much stuck forever.  I’ve had people at gaming tournaments and events come up and ask if I was DJTyrant, or even my girlfriend if she knew who I was.

My main character’s name is Berrorth, which (I think) came from the random name generator. If it wasn’t, I think it was just an off the cuff spur of the moment thing, Berr (as in a bear) and ‘orth’ just sounded cool to be honest. No one can seem to pronounce it correctly, so I’m usually reffered to as ‘Berr’. The way I pronounce it ends up being bear - roth. The moniker will probably change once the race changes go live, I will likely change to a human (female).

Heartbourne (The Archivist):
I got Heartbourne from the song Wishmaster:

Master!
Apprentice!
Heartbo(u)rne, 7th Seeker
Warrior!
Disciple!
In me the Wishmaster
.

In case you haven’t heard it: YouTube - Wishmaster - The Misheard Lyrics

And it goes without saying that I’m going for the Seeker title: 3000 Quests Completed - Achievement - World of Warcraft

Heartbourne was originally my rogue on Spinebreaker, but I liked the name so much that I used it for my mage on Proudmoore. When I transferred my rogue to Proudmoore, I name changed him to Bladebourne. Since then, all of my alts have been -bourne, and Bladebourne remains as my main.

iTZKooPA (The King of the Anthropomorphic Reptiles):
I’ve been rocking iTZKooPA as my writing name for quite some time. It obviously came from the Mario Bros. universe that I was obsessed with as a child. Many a days were spent beating Super Mario Bros. 3, over and over, and over.  Koopa Troopas have always been my favorite baddie from the game, and when I realized that my real name was dominated by an Irish Catholic singer, I decided to write under a pseudonym. iTZKooPA was born.

Believe it or not Solidsam’s name came from actual creativity. The name was given based upon the class, a rogue. I thought of two other popular characters based on stealth, Solid Snake and Sam Fisher, and created the best mash-up. Only one person has ever figured it out. Most just assume my name is Sam.  And that I was raised in the 70’s.

Solidsagart was born due to my hatred of WoW’s friend system. Rather than trying to be creative again, I thought it was more important to be recognizable. Hence the Solid prefix in the name. It worked, people have asked me if I was Solidsamm. Sagart is simply Gaelic for priest.

Pixiestixy (The Better 1/5th):
Pixiestix has been my nickname and online handle for more than 10 years. It all started back in my early high school days, when a group of my girly-girl friends and I (this was high school, what do you want!?) were at a fair and decided to get caricatures drawn of us. Each of us decided to have our drawings based on a nickname. Since I didn’t have a nickname at that time, one of the girls said, “Pixiestix! Because you are hyper and sugary-sweet like the candy!” I was THRILLED; adopted the name, and it’s been my online handle ever since, in some variation or another. Usually containing “pixie.” And I still have a copy of the caricature in one of my high school scrapbooks

Locomomo: My main rogue, and I didn’t think particularly long or hard for my name. Momo has been a Japanese name I’ve liked for a while (means peach), and at the time I was reading a comic with a character with that name. Loco seems to go well in front of it. So, why not be a crazy peach?

Pixielocks: My own version of Goldilocks, perfect for a pixie-warlock

There you have it, the origins of our ridiculous names.  In the words of Pixiestixy, “Now (you) know (and knowing is half the battle!).”  Where did your handle come from?

Taskun is taken from a anime series named FLCL, it’s a you either know it or you don’t kind of thing…I love it when people recognize it online :)

My other (more used) persona is NightStalker321, I’ve been using that name for many years. The NightStalker part was rather random, it honestly just came to me, I assume its from my partial love of all things stealthy. The 321 ending is from another anime series called Cowboy Bebop, from it’s opening song.

By Vayder on Tuesday, October 20th, 2009 at 4:33 pm

I’ve been using the name Vayder for over 6 years now, since the days of Beta. If you havent realized by now( and i know most of you have) i have a slight obsession with all things Star Wars. Just about every toon ive made has had a Star Wars themed name. Not just characters but also, planets, systems, ships, religions, and driods. My onsession is SW is compaired to my obsession with Warcraft Lore!

By Xianghua on Tuesday, October 20th, 2009 at 4:43 pm

I take my main’s name straight from Soul Calibur II, the sequel to an old arcade game that moved onto the Xbox and PS2.

As Xianghua was already taken when I joined the server, I settled for Chai_Xianghua, though in-game it has no space or underscore because of naming rules.

To date not one person has pronounced it correctly. xD

By Lynex on Tuesday, October 20th, 2009 at 4:46 pm

I got my name from pure creativity. Later I learned that my toon’s name is similar to some kind of operating system. My other toon’s names all came from things that happened online with Lynex.

By Whitesuperman26 on Tuesday, October 20th, 2009 at 5:25 pm

Whitesuperman was kind of an inside joke at the time i made it. My nickname in football was superman, and everyone called me that, so i wanted superman somehow incorporated into the name, i was searching superman links on wikipedia when i came across a movie called, “Black Superman” about a black man who smokes weed and gains super powers, i thought that was funny so i stuck with it. and when ever i play online games people always have to ask, “Isn’t Superman already white?”

By Sleepyman on Tuesday, October 20th, 2009 at 5:44 pm

Sleepyman has been my name for most everything i do and variations of it ,Im even calledit by my friends, I am a sleepy person and ofcourse fall asleep a lot plus him being my wow character was a simple choice as I made him at 3 am and was very sleepy =)

By 4KhazModan on Tuesday, October 20th, 2009 at 6:50 pm

My name comes from a phrase that warcraft dwarves have spurted for quite awhile, and as my main is a dwarf, I thought that this being a famous catchphrase, was quite fitting

By cocopuff on Tuesday, October 20th, 2009 at 6:55 pm

wow non of my characters name have such a long history behind am most of the once i made were random generated and i adjusted the name to my liking like my mages name bove the original name the one the random botton generated was twice as long in the middle i saw the perfect name my hunter has a similar story as does my druid but later i started gettign a bit more creative with my names i named my rogeu man of steal (corny i know) i dont why maybe because i thought it would be funny i wanted to name my warlock abraper unfortinatlely bliz wold not alove it and i would have to rename him adraber my DK was first named littlewang (no it does mean what i am sure many of think it does) it got it from the project lores “10 days of night” sagment but since my guy was 5th of the tourens size(go gnomes!) i named him littlewang but blizzard did not allow it and i was forced to change his name to littlewarrio but i ment to name him little warrior and peope often ask me if i left of the are or it was a refrence to mario

By The Enemy on Tuesday, October 20th, 2009 at 7:37 pm

Mine comes from the original Halo - my friends and I would play deathmatch games on it all the time, and I made the name as a play on both the floating name above your head (as in I see the enemy!) and the text that would display on someone’s getting killed - ” was killed by theenemy”.

I only used it on Halo and the sequels, but when my guild transferred to Sargeras, I had to rename my character - we had been playing Halo again around that time, and I gave it a shot - it was available, and it stuck.

By HardCor on Tuesday, October 20th, 2009 at 8:09 pm

My real name is Cor, and Hardcor seemed cool, I was surprised that it wasent taken on my server!

    Proudmoore for the win! :-)

By Alayea on Tuesday, October 20th, 2009 at 8:40 pm

I’ve had this online name ever since middle-school back in ‘98-’99 (that’s 7th and 8th grade for those of you who went to a junior high instead). I had been wondering what name to pick for an e-mail address for a class assignment, when I thought of the anime Ronin Warriors and how the evil-turned-good Lady Kayura had a name with a strange (to my ears) pronunciation. Hence, “Alayea” was created.

By Raethos on Tuesday, October 20th, 2009 at 8:41 pm

Raethos came from ‘Wraith’, but with different spelling because I only wanted the same sound, and ‘os’ thrown in for good measure. I’m usually just called Rae, and most of my characters have that at the start of them.

By aadjed on Tuesday, October 20th, 2009 at 11:09 pm

I’ve used this name forever. Aadje is my RL nickname n added the “‘d” as the first letter of my last name. But in wow it went to aad-jed on vent.
I have rolled a lock which i named doclock n was amazed the name was still available on the server.

By Zreena on Wednesday, October 21st, 2009 at 12:50 am

I made up my name when I was 10 for a short story I was writing. Been using it for everything ever since.

By Wrigleysivy on Wednesday, October 21st, 2009 at 1:41 am

This was the first name I came up with. It is a combo of Wrigley Field (Chicago Cubs stadium) and the ivy that covers the outfield wall. I have had a few people get it. Others are Wrigged, Bleacherbum and Wrigleycub. Yeah, I like the cubs

By Quetlan of Bloodhoof on Wednesday, October 21st, 2009 at 3:19 am

Quetlan is a BE so a name with a Q sounded just right. For my lock Ahjedene, i took the name from the diablo universe. I forgot what it ment :)

By Uvedoble on Wednesday, October 21st, 2009 at 5:38 am

my two main toon is called Uvedoble , im known mainly as Uve (phonetecally oo-bay). Uvedoble is the spanish word for the letter ‘W’ and i thought it was cool to have a completely random name that nobody could understand.

By Legolost on Wednesday, October 21st, 2009 at 8:58 am

I named my first toon a nelf priest Legolost. A play on the name Legolas from LOTR and to this day no one has gotten the reference. I use Legadin for my pally, a play of retadin/tankadin but with my lego prefix instead

By Tharon on Wednesday, October 21st, 2009 at 10:11 am

Well seein’s how my name is already unique and the name of The God of Hunting, I had to use it. Mind you Tharon is only a nickname and I have used my full name, Tharonous, for my Warrior and Tharoneous for another toon. My main is Twest, first init + last name. With a name like mine, creativity isn’t needed.

By Agadax on Wednesday, October 21st, 2009 at 11:44 am

My main is a Troll Hunter. I found inspiration for the name when I thought of my Warcraft II days and the heavily-stylized troll speech files. “I got axe for you” was one such quip but with the accent it sounded something like “Agadax for you”. Being on an RP server (to play with RL friends) I’ve had a ridiculous number of positive comments on the name which is ironic since I don’t RP at all myself.
It should also be mentioned that DrClaw was my pet raptor for the whole grind to 80, replaced by a wolf for the dps, but it started my trend of giving my pets titles.

By Kyle on Wednesday, October 21st, 2009 at 12:17 pm

    KAA
my real names kyle, and people at school and at home just got lazy in saying the full pronunciation and just started sayin kaa, so i have been known kaa for about 6 years now ^^

By Kyle on Wednesday, October 21st, 2009 at 12:20 pm

and btw, tharon your names awesome

By Dyra on Thursday, October 22nd, 2009 at 4:10 am

Dyra was something I made up that sounded cool for an undead priest. Apparently it means something in Russian though. Not figured it out yet :(

    Vulpine (troll hunter) means foxy.

Beelzeebob, Orc warlock. It just fits :P

Greggore, UD DK. Wanted a name with gore in it. This is what I came up with.

Tuliya, Cow druid. Made this up for my NElf druid. When I decided to play horde instead my cow druid inherited the name.

By jimbob on Thursday, October 22nd, 2009 at 11:35 am

I hate to admit this (as it sounds rather childish, but is purely down to lack of imagination lol) but all my toons are named after mis-spellings of STD’s :S

There’s Herpeace (holy priest, geddit?), Klamidia (NE rogue) and Ghonaria (UD ‘lock)

By khazzhar on Thursday, October 22nd, 2009 at 5:41 pm

Funny that I am reading this post today. Earlier in-game someone psted me basically asking why wasn’t I a mage, because my char’s name (Beldan) is a mage in the book. I randomly came up with the name “Beldan” one day, and had no idea that it also apparently is the same name as a character in a book (I got the impression that the book was a WoW book due to the fact that the guy said the character was a dwarf mage). My other char names have been Saalas, Beldan, Zhalath, Khazzhar (I really like the Zh combination, sounds cool :D ) and other alts on different account to numerous to mention. Lately I have gone from the “cool sounding” name to the “slightly silly name”, such as an Orc rogue named Tibblesworth and an Orc shammy named Nibblesworth. Ironically, even though those are the slightly silly sounding names, they took me the longest to decide upon.

By Noric on Saturday, October 24th, 2009 at 12:40 pm

My main is a Hloy Paladin and I would have used Cirrus as I usually name my male pallies Cirrus Whiteheart but it was taken so I just went with Whiteheart. My Warrior is Noricironaxe (Noric Ironaxe) a dwarven name I came up with a long time ago for the original Icewind Dale game. It’s kind of a variation on Norse (or Nordic) mythology. My priest Naythis just came to me. I have numerous alts but each one has a unique name. some of which I’m the only one with that name on all the servers in WoW… at least according to the Armory.
