Kalu’ak Fishing Derby and Heirloom Rings

wotlk_tuskarrHot off of the @Warcraft Twitter feed, we have news of the next new Heirloom piece: rings! And they come from an unexpected source: the Kalu’ak fishing derby. From the patch notes:

The all-new Kalu’ak Fishing Derby, a test of fishing skill with a healthy dash of luck, has come to Northrend! Every Wednesday beginning at 8 PM players can try to catch the elusive Blacktip Shark. Elder Clearwater sits in Dalaran for one hour awaiting the return of the quickest, most experienced fisher to bring him this shark. This champion fisher will be rewarded in-kind for returning with the first catch. Those who aren’t able to return with the first catch will still receive just reward for getting the Blacktip Shark to Elder Clearwater before he takes his leave. It is said that these sharks’ favorite meal are the bite-sized Pygmy Suckerfish. Perhaps a hook in their waters will do the trick.

This seems pretty random. Unlike the Stranglethorn Vale fishing contest, which requires precise planning and a strategy, this one has more of a factor of luck involved. In addition, we have this tidbit as well:

Master Angler of Stranglethorn” has been changed to “Master Angler of Azeroth” and can be achieved by winning either the Kalu’ak Fishing Derby or the Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza.

This is great news for anyone aiming for the Salty meta-achievement. The Stranglethorn contest is very competitive and really encourages subversive behavior to win.

As far as the ring, I’d kind of like to see it be a reward for the fishing contest to make it rare, but having it as a consolation prize as well could be great for gearing up my alts. There was recently a new buff data-mined that showed a +5% XP bonus from an heirloom, and as no current heirlooms provide 5%, I think its a safe assumption that it will be on these rings. This is a great incentive to work on fishing!

    Um. That’s interesting? I don’t know. *scraches head*

    It’s true that there are no heirlooms that give 5% buff to xp gained. However, there are the shoulders and chest pieces that provide 10% each. ;)

    (Sorry for the double post, I forgot to comment on another thing.)

    “The Stranglethorn contest is very competitive and really encourages subversive behavior to win.”

    Definitely. My twin has tried to win the STV weekly, but everytime there’d be a player covering up a node so that she couldn’t loot her catches. I’ve also heard that on my realm, Malfurion, that there’s a player who wins the STV almost every single time “just for the hell of it”. Yeah…

    While I want the rings, I hate having to rely on RNG to earn one. I wouldn’t mind doing a second rep with the fishing guy to be able to buy one, but RNG AND having to be the first person to fish one up? Plus I doubt it will be 100% drop from the reward so we’re looking at triple luck on one item :(

    25% extra XP? I like that. To be honest I wouldn’t want to work my a** off for 5% more XP, I don’t think that bonus will qualify the item for the rare reward status. My thought: Fishing contest prize tokens?

    Just having a chance at any fishing contest works for me. Some of us actually work weekends, and planning a vacation around a yearly attempt at the Booty Bay contest just invites funny looks.

    Now, if they can just make it more compatible for us night-owls….

    @Guy’s

    It said it’s Ring’s! There obviously not going to be unique (like trinket’s)

    1=5%

    2=10%

    With the shoulder’s and chest, this makes a total of 30% Extra XP gain.

    Yes they stack. With rested XP, that makes a total of 230% Extra XP! Don’t sound like alot? Try it out and believe me you will Notice.

    I’m so happy about the new fishing derby, I’ve been trying for years to win the fishing tournament and have developed a healthy hate for many people in the process. My biggest hope is that they’ll have some way to stop the same person from winning 50 times. Say, when you win the first time you get the reward and its like a normal quest, but you can still catch the fish and do the secondary turn-in they mentioned for whatever booby prize they implement.

    I agree with Kagitaar. One thing I cannot stand about the current setup for the BB Tourney is the fact that a small number of players have monopolized the contest. No matter how quick you are, what purported short-cuts you try to use, what buffs you get, it always seems to be the same 4 or 5 people who win EVERY week.

    While I’m not a fan of the RNG, at least this will bring some fairness and transparency to the winners. A really unlucky roll for everyone would be for the toon to win multiple times, but we all know what a fickle mistress the RNG can be.

    I love how blizzard has completely given up on making it a challenge to level. Woot for more EXP, but it doesn’t really help the already ready-to-burst realms. Baelgun already sees players hit 80 in two weeks (Almost solely from BGs). IMO 230% more exp is pretty rediculous.
