Tags: death knights, leveling, outlands, overpowered
As I said in my last post, I have been putting some time into leveling my level 60ish toons and trying to get them ready for prime time. As I’ve been questing away in Outland there is one thing I can’t seem to get away from, Death Knights! They are everywhere!
I’m not saying this is a bad thing, in fact it has worked to my advantage quite a bit. Leveling my resto-shaman for instance, has been a breeze. I just type “Healer LFG any instance, I will heal all you DKs!!” into general and I have a group together within minutes every time.
The fact of the matter is that DKs can destroy anything in Outland, I’ve experienced it myself by soloing groups quests several levels above me on my own Death Knight. Dare I saw they are a bit overpowered when compared to other classes of that level (I’ll save the max level discussion for later)? While not crazy about playing the class myself, I sure don’t mind riding their coattails through instances and leveling myself that much faster!
It’s not all smiles, however. I’ll admit the DK issue can be a bit problematic, there are of course Horde DKs everywhere, and I don’t stand a chance against them. Also, it does make me miss class diversity a bit, so I hope everything will even out a bit by the time my alts start hitting Northrend.
I know I had heard reports of the DKs running rampant all over Outland when WotLK first dropped, but I would have thought by now things would have calmed down. It appears they haven’t. It begs the questions, is everyone alting on a Death Knight? Or am I just experiencing the second wave of people leveling their DKs after they first geared up their mains?
I can appreciate the new Death Knight craze, but is anyone leveling anything else?

I’m levelling all my characters on my new realm, Saurfang(eu) which is a new realm altogether (AQ gates closed too).
And there’s merely a handful of Death Knights, and tons of players my level, which is nice actually being able to run RFC & DM with a genuine group, rather than boosts or running it solo at a higher level. It’s nice playing the content at the levels and gear it was designed for. =]
So yeah, people are levelling other things, just on brand new realms on a different continent. (Saurfang (Eng Speaking) and Ulduar (DE) ). =]

and no, i do not level anything besides my new main, i dropped my hunter and i only play my DK now

The problem that i see in WOTLK is just this, nobody wants to lvl a new toon from 1 - 80 even with the recruit a freind 80 levels is a long way to go. So the alternative, a toon that starts at 55, i don’t blame people for taking the easy way out, i myself have a 70 DK. The only problem is almost EVERYONE will have a DK alt, maybe blizzard could come out with something to give a jump start on other toons for EXP’d players??

I’m currently levelling a Death Knight (horde) in Blade’s Edge, but when I was in Hellfire is was really annoying when I would get into a group for Ramparts or Blood Furnace to see nothing but Death Knights. I never got a single drop at all because everyone else in the group needed the stuff (except my friend’s level 80 Enhance Shammy who was healing for us due to the lack of healers). It gets annoying, really annoying, hence why I never did Coilfang Reservoir or Auchindoun at all, all the groups are Death Knights. Luckily I can sometimes snag a group that maybe has one other death knight in it, but that’s rare.

iv got my main to 80 (yay!) so im running a recruit a friend at the moment. with my 1st 2 toons lvld up (bm hunter and holy priest combo) and my 41 shammy free lvd up im already a quarter of the way through my 2nd wave (prot pally and corrupt lock). towards the end of my 1st duo, the dks were everywhere! EPL, WPL, Sithilis, Blackrock mountain…and this was only last week! im guessing they ran out of floor space in outlands

Me and my brother (who both play wow) actually made a little prediction when it came to DK populations. We forsaw 3 great swarms of them…
1. When WOTLK launched
2. When the free 10-day trial of WOTLK started
3. Christmas (cause everyone under the age of 20 was gonna get it under the tree, myself included).
Although there was a 4th spike when they allowed you to make DKs on any server, but that was uncallable.

i hate lvling a DK id get him 2 the mid 60s and get sick of their same old spells so id send all his gold 2 my main(lock) and delete him… hardly see any Dks in northrend on my server
By Hydro on Friday, February 13th, 2009 at 7:58 pm
I am one of the people who have made a DK and have my main which is pretty well geared to 80 and also have my DK to 77. I still would like to know alot more details on things such as recruit a friend and how it works. currently lvling 2 healers due to the lack of them but they’re both classes that could be dps or heal with oen spec: Elemental Shammy and Disc Priest. Both are amazing!

Trying not to be one of the 12 million players in world of warcraft with a level 60 DK alt so im leveling a hunter from level 1 to 60 and its takeing a hell of a time, which is why everyone makes a DK, because there plate wearers and not squishy plus they can have zombies, can tank, and even dps! However the main reason, they start out at level 55! I mean if your like me you didnt even have alts at 70 cause you didnt feel the need for one, however now you do for example and when you do make an alt you just want it in northerand right away right? Well thats not the cause for all the other class’s being the main reason for DKs alts, as well as the fact with blue glowing eyes, and white/black/green skin i mean its pretty sweet. But yes people could cut back because there not THAT cool. kinda but not to much.
By Hatell on Friday, February 13th, 2009 at 9:05 pm
Yeah, definitely the second wave, as well as the wave of “Now you can make a DK on any realm!” and people just want to do those ubber starting quests and then enjoy lvling in outlands again. Seriously, that was the best part.
Then you also have people like my friend who is three lvls from his first 55 (even though he started playing b4 me and still got TBC for no real reason imo) who are now mad lvling to get up to the required lvl.
Right now, though, I’m working on my Priest and enjoying it. XD I’m @ 79 and the only trouble I’m having w/ lvling is Alchemy. /die

I love WoW, but I’m really against a hero class. Anyway, it was hard for me on my hunter to level 58-68 because I’d be constantly ganked by Death Knights. If I got distance and decided to shoot my way out, I’d be Death Gripped to my death.
Currently, I’m leveling a paladin (only level 27) and I gotta say the play style is very nice, no idea why I didn’t before.
By Genocide on Friday, February 13th, 2009 at 9:33 pm
What i hope Blizzard does at some point is do something exactly like the DK starting area, but for all calsses. If you have a level 55 on a server, you should be able to start a character of any class at that level. This would Make alot of people happy, and while yes it might decrease the number of people running “Old” content, i think it is worth it, because as of now, leveling from 1-80 is just wayyyyyy to much for any sane person to want to do again.
By Dulica on Friday, February 13th, 2009 at 10:06 pm
I thought maybe I’d get a DK when my main hit 55, but I didn’t want to quit my warrior. So I’m one of the few people in my guild without a DK. I did start a mage though, but only because the guild didn’t have one. I get kind of tired of all the DK’s running around too. Maybe the new-ness will wear off soon
By JasonMB on Friday, February 13th, 2009 at 11:42 pm
I dont even PLAY WOW and i know DKs are a problem. I tried the demo a few weeks ago because im to poor to afford the full game + monthly fees but still like the game.
So i was trying out a new class (mage) and went to Iron Forge and found people being DKs of all races and levels. I saw maybe 2 fellow mages and a bunch of healers but more DKs than anything.
It was weird.
Now dont get me wrong when I start WOW (if i start WOW) im going to be a DK, what spec idk yet probably tank.
By Sean on Friday, February 13th, 2009 at 11:47 pm
You’ll have to get the expansions and a character to level 55 first. :p
Death Knights are overrated anyway, they’re just building the class up for a major fall/nerfage to combat the overpopulation. Least I suspect they will. o_O
By desifier on Saturday, February 14th, 2009 at 12:01 am
I have a friend with a resto druid. He and my 62 DK run Ramps alone.
That is overpowered when a DK and one healer can run an instance by themselves.
By JasonMB on Saturday, February 14th, 2009 at 12:11 am
@Sean
Well I’m debating weither I want to tank as a DK or as a Ret Pally. Im debating just abandoning DKs all together with the announcement of Dual specing.
Though since im not really a player with intimate knowledge of the game a few details escape me.
By LuntiX on Saturday, February 14th, 2009 at 1:49 am
@ JasonMB, tank as a Prot Pally and DPS as a Ret Pally when you hit 80, but if you want to tank and don’t want to worry about mana for your attacks, go Warrior.
Death Knights shouldn’t be tanks but instead should be DPS Machines. My Death Knight is only 66, spec’d as Unholy and he pulls great DPS, usually second on Recount (cause I always make sure first is tank, durr).
Up to you though. If you want tanking go Prot Pally or Prot Warrior. If you want DPS go Ret Pally or Death Knight (Any Spec works but i find Unholy to be top notch).
By Twistedlux on Saturday, February 14th, 2009 at 9:43 am
still leveling my holy pally and i usually quest with a DK or to just because of the high dps their capable of. it makes things a lot easier.
By Zaraken on Saturday, February 14th, 2009 at 11:52 am
Having an 80 dk on Dragonblight I can say the dk plague ends when you hit Northrend for most part. While you may get like 2 of them often for UK in a group beyond that it seems they either have lost interest or are 80 with it. I gotten few other dks while lving there in instances and on my 72 pally alt I tanked Nexus and UK with no dks in group quite often.
Outlands is the experimental land for trying dks out, people either get sick of them or main them to 80 after that point. So diversity is in the north.
By Larzun on Saturday, February 14th, 2009 at 12:49 pm
Well , I’m in the same position as JasonMB , as he , i also had the oportunity to play the game , and started to like it a lot , unfortunately can’t afford the fees , otherwise the game can be bought even with my low budget in a sec. , now back to the chars in the game , i know about the DK and let’s face it : he’s pretty cool , but my choice has been during the time i played it , and will be if i get to play it on a regular basis the prot. pally , and it’s not because he’s hard to lvl or in a wish to make myself look tougher than i am , but he’s a pretty solid class if you know how to make the best of the abilities you have at hand , the only major issue would be his weakness against spellcasters , the DK on the other hand i’d try only after i lvld a lock and more for the idea of having a neat looking DK that can sometimes replace a char that i’ve grown bored of or downright sick of it…see ya
By Angel on Saturday, February 14th, 2009 at 4:36 pm
Look on the bright side, atleast there are people in Outlands that are there for more then achievements/dailies.
Take a look at the 30-40 zones.. a dozen people (maybe.) The 20-30 zone… a half dozen. The 1-20 dozens.. 2.
Pretty soon there will be no one to run the outlands instances just like there are very few if any groups for 40-60 instances and maybe 20-30 instances.
By Hasoondi on Saturday, February 14th, 2009 at 7:37 pm
@LunatiX
If tank is beating you on the dps part of recount then you are a bad dps. Tanks are only interested in threat and threat and dps are not the same thing.
@ Bastosa
When will the next Tanking 101 come out cause I am trying to make my prot pally better. Thank you for the info

By Rugi on Sunday, February 15th, 2009 at 11:58 am
Tried the Death Knight, saw some really nice things, didn’t quite like it, rolled a shammy.
The thing is, even though leveling from 1-80 is hard, it gives you the great experience of experimenting your class and learn all the tricks. Even thought the Death Knight starting system is nicely done, I still prefer the old-fashioned way of leveling.
By kiley on Sunday, February 15th, 2009 at 2:26 pm
i’m actually just finished getting my resto shaman alt up to 80. So now i’m debating about whether to go for a dk alt or something different. Maybe a lock.
By jhez on Sunday, February 15th, 2009 at 4:14 pm
i’m trying to ding my pally so i can have a 80 healer but getting into instances is nearly impossible because DK’s get better DPS.
By JasonMB on Sunday, February 15th, 2009 at 4:59 pm
@LunxtIX
Thansk for the advice. I like the idea of tanking OR DPS. But to be honest when/if I start WOW im going in order of things I want to be …..i’ve planned this out. Including professions, names, and starting servers (im going Exectus OR may join the PL guild on whatever server that is on….and yes im rolling Alliance all the way.
If done the whole Horde route….just never liked it all that much…was undead, dark elf, Tauren (must admit my fav of all the Horde) but just never got into it like i did with Alliance. Sorry Horde guys.
Draeni Hunter
Gnome Mage
then either Tank/DPS warrior/DK/Pally
OR Draeni Shaman…for healing.

I KNOW! this is so retarted. when WOTLK came out i have a lvl 58 pally and logged off right inside of the inn in thrallmar. but now i cant get any quests done b/c the DKs are all doing them! but i can heal instances quite easily
By Drhorrible on Sunday, February 15th, 2009 at 6:19 pm
I’ve been leveling my main, a lvl 62 lock, for about a month now, partly because its my 1st toon but also because it takes soooo long to do the 1st 50 or so levels.
i can see why people want to start a dk, it would save alot of time when starting a new character. as for my server, ive just hit outland and the place is swaaaarming with dks, like everywhere.
in future i think they should do something similar to the dk set up where if you have a lvl 55 already then you can start any class at 55, sure there would be less people playing the original content, but you would have to play it atleast once to get there anyways, plus the new content is far more fun than the classic stuff, which is part of the reason the 1st 50 or so levels take so long. its just boring now.

My DK is already in northrend, being unholy dps and making things all diseased and gross, mon.
I’m actually levelling a hunter atm through Outland. It’s a lot of fun, she’s the luckiest Tauren in the world. She keeps finding blue world drops and found an epic while she was still leveling in Azeroth!
And yeah, DKs are freaking everywhere, I think everyone knew this would happen. I’m more interested to hear what the next hero class would be.
I’m thinking along the likes of Runemaster? I just love that name RUNEMASTER, it just sounds epic, c’mon. They’re like DnD monks, no armour just otherworldly super powers and pummeling fists.
Check them out in Wowwiki sometime.

My nephew LOVES his DK but I’m not particularly fond of them. I have 3; 1 on my horde server Drak’Tharon, and 2 on my alliance server Muradin (2 accounts). I’ve gotten one to lvl 62 and the others haven’t even logged in yet. The seem like an ok class but I’m overwhelmed by the abilities. It would have been nice to have a choice of starting at 55 or start at lvl 1. I think learning the skills as you earn them is an important part of learning the character. I have a lvl 80 Holy Paladin (Whiteheart-Muradin) and I’m still learning new things about that class.
By Deadofknight on Monday, February 16th, 2009 at 12:29 pm
I have to admit that I parked my 68 Warlock for a DK when the expansion came out. I have leveled the DK to 80 and have started raiding with him. The population does thin out a bit in Northrend, and we usually have 3 of them (tops) in a Naxx25 raid. It is the only class I have ever played (and I have tried them all) where I am fearless, and that makes playing them fun.
On the other hand, a DK is not the end all, be all in the game. I have recently gong back to my Warlock and am now at 70…planning to play him til 80. I also have a 63 Shadow Priest that is anxiously awaiting dual specs!
The DK’s are fun, for sure, but so are most of the other classes.
By Muted on Monday, February 16th, 2009 at 3:19 pm
I noticed with the change to allow Dks made on any server provided you have a 55, the amount of Dks is massive. Its not uncommon to wanna level one either. In a few hours you can have your dk in outlands at 58 starting fresh, and the power they have + with pets, makes leveling one up very easy. The power they have atm is the attraction everyone has to them. I have myself made 5 dks on different servers horde and alliance, because they are so easy to level

i got my dk up to lvl 60, witch wasent hard, and now i just use him to farm low lvl instances to make money for my main(witch id a reso-druid who isent all that great at tanking) and help power lvl friends. i may lvl him more eventually, but for now, this works perfect.

well i used to play a warior who i got to 58 before i left the game then when wtlk came out i was like ”well it ill be cool to get my war to 80 while street figther 4 come’s” but then i fell inlove with the dk’scuz they are like warriors with ”more stuff” so i left my war and now my main is my dk only thing i don’t like is that i can’t use sheild’s but anyway there is lot’s of one-handed stuff that give’s def and stam for tankin anyway as an ex-war i prefer dk’s

All I know is I was in the lower 60’s on my lock when wrath came out (yes I am an 80 now and enjoying the heroics) and I loved the fact that Death Knights were every where because I do not share the same loot, every group wanted me to increase the chances of them getting their loot, but what made it perfect was being the only caster and lots of times only clothie minus the holy priests that were selling themselves to heal, I would get any and all blue caster gear.
By Fidgitt on Tuesday, February 17th, 2009 at 8:09 am
I got my mage to 80 and am now working on my elemental shaman and get her to 80. She’s currently 72 and I will admit, while I absolutely love her I’m finding that I need to get back into that ‘drop totems-kill bad guy-heal self’ frame of mind after having loads o’ fun with my mage and using things like Living Bomb and Hot Streak.

I Myself have an 80 dk but honestly it seems kind of boring. now dont get me wrong i love being able to get a group as a tank and having an 80 but id much rather play something else by now. I started a preist the other day and not having any low lv ppl on my realm Mannoroth(horde side anyway) is starting to get annoying Im stuck spending hours trying to find any group of an instance undre lv 60 even my 56 resto druid is having a hard time finding groups. It seems that every time i go into orgrimar theres a new dk completing the quest to join the horde.

I’m an old WoW player, playing WoW for 3 year’s before the TBC and I love to play the game. My main is a lvl 80 Hunter and like so many other I had to try out the DK when the Lich came out. And yes it was fun at the start but it is just another Character with some special ability’s, like it use Runes insted of mana. But in the long run get a bit boring to play, cos the fact the way I play I guess. Yes the DK is strong, I have Frost spec on my DK and it work’s fine by the way, he’s just like a Frost-Mage with a twist, he use Plate not Cloth and that do make him special in my eyes! Besides that he’s just another char in me collection of toons, I rather play my hunter, it more fun and now with my new pet (Loque’Nahak) it’s even more fun, don’t get me wrong I like to play DK to.
The death-Knight is here to stay, but they need some more prober gear, also the need a Forge in Shadow wault.
